Top 10 Best Video Games: Holiday Season 2012 ? All My Faves ...

Posted on Friday, November 30th, 2012 by Uri Halevi

Trying to follow a?$67 billion video game industry is not an easy task. This is the only guide you?ll ever need for a clear and unbiased reviews of all the newest and most exciting video games the market has to offer.

Xbox 360, PlayStation 3 or Wii U?

Before you run and buy a video game as a Christmas present for your teen aged boy (or Immature Boyfriend? or Infantile Husband? ;) ) you must stop for a second and ponder which video game console do they have? Each console has it?s distinguished video games titles ( and some games are good for all the brands?). Purchasing a video game that your loved one can?t play is brutal, so though the surprise will be ruined, ask them! Better safe then sorry. If you plan to accompany the video game with a brand new console though, here is a link that will help you decide which brand will meet your goals.

Alpha Male Games

Aggression is something that has to be channeled. The good people of the gaming industry are constantly happy to provide us with ways to express our dark desires in creative ways. These are our top three high tempo action games, one for each timeline period: Future, Present and past. What is your weapon of choice?

1. Halo 4 ? The Future:

Halo is one of the world?s most popular action games, and is xBox360?s best seller since it was first lunched on 2001. On this long-awaited release the fate of the universe lies again on the muscular shoulders of Master Chief, the ultimate green-armored soldier, who wakes from his icing to find out that since the last time he was summoned to save the world, things actually got worse. If you always wished you could fight alongside other Spartans or fly a Pelican, on Halo 4 you will have the chance. Non-stop action, gorgeous graphics, awesome game-play and lots of new exciting features makes Halo 4 a must for this year?s wishlist of any?xBox360 owner.

2. Call of Duty: Black Ops II ? The Present:

Much like it?s predecessors, Call of Duty: Black Ops II has a familiar campaign of realistic and current special forces gaming. Still, the COD team was not too over confident with the games past success and worked hard in delivering great new features such as squad-based strategy missions and a plotline that branches according to a few key decisions, more customization options than ever before and a nice twist with the Zombie Mode feature that allows up to four players to engage a series of maps in which the main objective is to survive against the undead horde. COD Black Ops II can be played on most consoles and always guarantees a good time, especially in it?s online?multiplayer mode.

3. ASSASSIN?S CREED 3 ? The Past:

After three long? years of anticipation Assassin?s Creed 3 is finally here and as we discovered, was worth the wait. You will join Connor,?a half Native Indian ? half British Assassin,? back in the time when the American Revolution took place. Using various 18th century weaponry such as your default Native Indian Tomahawk, bow and arrow, the most inventive rope dart and more to eliminate all those who stand in your people?s road to happiness? On Assassin?s Creed 3 Connor can take control of a ship and take on his enemies on the high-seas, run through the trees plus you will find a useful tutorial system that will help you get started and then improve on the areas where you?re weakest. The game has both great and vast game plots along with the Assassin?s Creed?s famous multiplayer mode and is good for all the consoles including the WiiU.

Sports All Stars!

Aside from killing things, sports games are ever popular for gamers of all ages. Due to the fact that preferred sports are a subjective issue, we chose our (or should I say my?:) ) personal favorites. All My Faves proudly presents, Our All Stars:

?

4. Madden NFL 13

Madden NFL 13 is the ultimate Football game. Year after year the EA Sports manage to reinvent Football gaming and this year?s version has topped all of it?s predecessors. EA simplified the games interface, introducing a one hub screen that shows you how many players are online and provides you with quick access to your communities and game careers. With great features such as receiver icons that change depending on the player?s regard, new pass trajectories so you can put the ball out in front or just above the receiver and more. The most significant innovation is the Infinity Engine which adds physics to Madden for the first time. The Infinity Engine makes every hit a little bit different so every tackle is a bit different, bodies colliding in a mid air move etc. The?result is the most realistic Madden so far. Get it!

5. NBA 2K13

Putting aside Marketing gimmicks like Justin Bieber?s part of the celebrity team and the fact that Jay Z is it?s executive producer, NBA 2k13 is without a question the best Basketball video game on the market. Aside from the usual NBA 2k amazing graphics this one has a new and improved right thumbstick-based Dribble Stick that allows you to make some awesome ankle breaker moves. The MyPlayer feature has taken on a slightly more personal, RPG-like role, where your custom baller participates in the rookie game, engages in inner team politics and address the media. Most importantly you can finally find out which team has the upper hand: the 2012 gold medal-winning Team USA basketball squad or the original 1992 Dream Team. On top of everything, if you have a Xbox 360 console, the NBA 2k13 Kinect voice support is awesome, allowing you to call your substitutions off the bench with a simple command.

6. FIFA Soccer 13

With Soccer?s popularity soaring in the U.S it?s video games are?permanent residents on the bestsellers lists. FIFA Soccer 13 is an addictive, fun and skillful game that will offer you a lot of joy and challenge. Though this years version isnt as inovative as the one last year, there still is a long list of improvements such as enhanced physics, better AI (both offensively and defensively), player physicality, a better defending system, a tweaked Ultimate Team mode, a new Skill Games mode and more. The most notable improvement is in the dribbling system, which have been inspired by the work done on FIFA Street, allowing you to swirl the ball around a player?s feet, tease defenders and humiliate your opponents. Also? they added skill games that makes the loading screens an enjoyable place to be. EA even added funny new contextual animations like players recovering from challenges and react in situations as they would in real life and the result is the best Soccer game around.

Other stuff?

Believe it or not, video games has more to offer then first-person killing actions games and sports? Closing our list are the most notable of these bunch, enjoy!

7. Need for Speed Most Wanted

If driving, racing, and eluding the police sounds to you like a fun way to spend the holidays, Need for Speed Most Wanted is the game for you. The game is brilliantly executed with high quality graphics and realistic affects such as getting sun blinded when you emerge a tunnel and flecks of dirt that cling the screen when you are going off road, and generally great looking surrounding graphics. your goal is to become the most notorious illegal race driver in the city. On your way toward becoming?infamous you need to break the law as much as you can by setting off speed cameras, bursting through billboards, evading the police and off course, entering street races. By being a bad donkey (the British term?) you score Speed Points that allows you to upgrade your cars. Your heat level determines just how much effort the police are putting into bringing you down, with faster cars and even call in SWAT teams to get you.?Need for Speed Most Wanted is a fun, up tempo and accelerating game that will keep your adrenalin level high.

8. LEGO Lord of the Rings

As a big Tolkien fan I was thrilled to hear about their latest game: LEGO Lord of the Rings. The game is based on?Peter Jackson?s successful film trilogy and every?dialogue and?strand of music on the game is taken from it. The game is great fun for the film?s fans but will also appeal to others who likes games with exploration, collection, lots of combat and puzzle-solving. The game was made for kids and is not very challenging but?the interface is extremely well designed, offering an interactive guided tour through three incredible films and relives all of the most memorable moments from them. Relive the epic moments like the swarming mass of orcs at Helm?s Deep and Gandalf?s battle with the Balrog in a mix of Tolkien?s vast and amazing Middle-Earth and LEGO?s cute playfulness. It might not be the best video game out there but it?s definitely my favorite this year.

9. New Super Mario Bros. U

It?s almost a modern tradition to welcome Christmas with a new Mario game? This year, Nintendo introduces the New Super Mario Bros. U as it?s first version of Mario designed for their Wii U and its multiple screens. The general feeling of it is that this time they really manages to capture the sense of carefree adventure of the old Mario games, the game contains a significant amount of challenge, both within its story mode and outside of it. You can really feel that the design team regards Super Mario World with as much affection as those of us who grew up with it. With nice features like collectable items, roaming enemies that must be defeated, secret items, alternate paths and extreme boss fights that occur within their own context, New Super Mario Bros. U is bound to provide you with good time. If you wish to test your ability, the Challenge Mode is the place for you: It places you on narrow platforms with enemies hurling projectiles at you, simply seeing how long you can survive, forces you to traverse an entire level without killing an enemy, not touching the ground and more. So do you need more encouraging? A New Super Mario Bros. awaits, go get it!

10. World of Warcraft: Mists of Pandaria

Writing a video games blog, I couldn?t ignore the World of Warcraft: Mists of Pandaria release. WoW is a phenomenon, it broke all selling records and redefined online gaming worldwide, so when an?expansion is released its worth a review! Nice features like an added Monk class that can be played as a tank, damage dealer or healer, the ancient China themed continent of Pandaria and the Pandaren race, participating in pet battles (an optional Monsuno-like combat system), Mounted quests and most importantly: you can level up to level 90!? Four dungeons unlock as you level up from 85, with big fights engaging towering bosses who exhibit unique attack patterns and challenge modes for Pandaria?s dungeons, where groups can race to knock down bosses and post clear times to online leaderboards and claim rewards. Blizzard included Scenarios, a more forgiving type of instanced content built for three players. The PvP is as always on WoW, exquisite. Mists of Pandaria?s PvP is expanded with two Battlegrounds, both of which feature well-designed game modes that feel very different and provide plenty of tactical depth.

Our Part is Done!

Now its your turn! You have a list to select from, all that is left is for you is to decide which of the games we suggested is most suited for your loved ones? And if you will treat yourselves with a game or two, we promise not to tell anyone? ;) enjoy!

New insights into mosquitoes' role as involuntary bioterrorists

ScienceDaily (Nov. 29, 2012) ? Mosquitos are involuntary bioterrorists. For many years scientists thought that mosquitoes provided the disease organisms which they spread with a relatively free ride because the insects didn't have much in the way of natural defenses to fight off these microscopic stowaways.

Recent research, however, has revealed that mosquitoes have surprisingly sophisticated immune systems. Unlike humans and most other animals, mosquitoes do not generate antibodies that identify and attack specific infectious agents. However, they have developed alternative methods for destroying various pathogens, including parasites that cause malaria.

In the latest study of the mosquito's immune system -- published online on Nov. 29 in the journal PLOS Pathogens -- a pair of Vanderbilt biologists have discovered mosquitoes possess a previously unknown mechanism for destroying pathogens that takes advantage of the peculiarities of the insect's circulatory system to increase its effectiveness.

Studies of this sort are providing the information needed to manipulate the mosquito immune system to block malaria parasites more effectively and to develop other novel disease control strategies.

"It may come as a surprise to many people, but mosquitoes get sick too and they need to protect themselves," said Juli?n Hillyer, assistant professor of biological sciences, who conducted the research with graduate student Jonas King.

"The mosquito's immune system isn't as complex as ours. About 350 of its 12,500 genes have immune functions," Hillyer said. "But it is remarkably effective. The vast majority of the malaria parasites that infect a mosquito die before they can get into the salivary glands where they can infect vertebrate prey, such as humans."

"Pathogens like those that cause malaria, dengue and yellow fevers come from the female's blood meal and end up in the mosquito's gut," Hillyer said. "They then leave the gut and enter the mosquito's main body cavity, and from there they have to make their way to its salivary glands."

Inside the body cavity, pathogens have to fight two main forces: the swift circulation of the mosquito's own blood, and attacks from the mosquito's immune system.

The mosquito's circulatory system is dramatically different from that of mammals and humans. A long tube extends from the insect's head to tail and is hung just under the cuticle shell that forms the mosquito's back. The heart makes up the rear two-thirds of the tube and consists of a series of valves within the tube and helical coils of muscle that surround the tube. These muscles cause the tube to expand and contract, producing a worm-like peristaltic pumping action.

Most of the time, the heart pumps the mosquito's blood -- a clear liquid called hemolymph -- toward the mosquito's head, but occasionally it reverses direction. The mosquito doesn't have arteries and veins like mammals. Instead, the blood flows from the heart into the abdominal cavity and eventually cycles back through the heart. "The mosquito's heart works something like the pump in a garden fountain," Hillyer said.

In order to make it to their goal, pathogens must pass through one of the heart valves. As a result, the valves act as physical bottlenecks during the migration of viruses and malaria parasites.

Cells called hemocytes are an important element in the mosquito's defense system. These are special immune cells carried in the hemolymph that play a role analogous to white blood cells in humans. They circulate around the body with the hemolyph and attack foreign cells and viruses when they contact them.

What Hillyer and King discovered was that when a mosquito becomes infected with bacteria or malaria parasites, a population of hemocytes is recruited to the valves of the heart, where they capture and destroy invading pathogens. These new mosquito immune cells, which they have named periostial hemocytes, substantially increase their odds of encountering and destroying invaders by congregating in areas of high hemolymph flow.

"What happens to these pathogens while they are carried inside the mosquito's body is a critical part of the infection cycle that we are just beginning to understand," said Hillyer.

This research was funded by the National Science Foundation grant number IOS-1051636.

Congo M23 rebels say withdrawing forces

GOMA, Democratic Republic of Congo (Reuters) - Rebels in eastern Democratic Republic of Congo have started withdrawing from towns captured since last week from government troops, following a deal brokered by Uganda, their military leader said on Wednesday.

Such a pull-out would mean the M23 rebel group was giving up gains from a lightning offensive carried out in the past week, but there was no indication they were ending their eight-month-old insurgency.

The rebellion, which U.N. experts say is backed by neighboring Rwanda, has raised the risk of all-out war in a borderlands region dogged by nearly two decades of conflict that has killed about 5 million people and is fuelled by competition over mineral resources.

"We're leaving Sake, we're leaving Masisi," Sultani Makenga told Reuters in rebel-held Goma, the provincial capital of North Kivu. "Goma will be later," he said, adding fighters would eventually pull back 20 km from the city.

"We want peace," Makenga said. "We're prepared for the return of government troops, they're going to come ... But if Kabila's troops harass the people we're prepared to come back in, we're just around the corner," he said.

Ugandan military chief Aronda Nyakayirima said on Tuesday after a meeting with Makenga that M23 had agreed to withdraw from Goma unconditionally. But M23's political leader Jean Marie Runiga initially cast doubt on the deal, saying the pull-out was contingent on a list of demands - including direct talks with President Joseph Kabila.

The mixed messages from Makenga and Runiga could be a sign of divisions within the movement, according to analyst Jason Stearns at independent think-tank the Rift Valley Institute.

"This is a military movement with a political wing created post facto ... it's undermined internal cohesion," he said.

Makenga told Reuters his decision to withdraw forces from Goma was made before the meeting with Uganda's army chief in Kampala, but Stearns believes M23 may be coming under external pressure given the storm of protest from regional powers caused by the rebel capture of Goma.

"The future of M23 depends on the diplomatic dance between donors, countries in the region and Kigali," Stearns said.

The rebels seized Goma on November20 after Congolese soldiers withdrew and U.N. peacekeepers gave up defending the city. U.N. experts say Rwanda, Congo's small but militarily powerful eastern neighbor, is giving orders to the rebels and supplying arms and recruits, a charge denied by Rwanda.

The Congolese army was skeptical about any M23 withdrawal.

"Let's see how things evolve, we'll see whether they're doing this in good faith or not ... Nothing has changed, we're still in our positions," Colonel Olivier Hamuli, spokesman for the FARDC army said.

About 100 people gathered in rain in Goma on Wednesday to protest against the possible return of government troops, marching to the U.N. offices to deliver a memo.

"When the government troops were here before we had no peace, now as we welcomed M23, we think they'll cause even more problems than before," protester Alain Safari said.

Makenga said rebel forces would withdraw to about 20 km of Goma, leaving a company of 100 soldiers at the airport, and allowing government troops to return to the city.

According to the agreement in Uganda, government troops would return to Goma on Thursday, followed by a visit on Friday by regional defense chiefs.

The conflict in eastern Congo - which has big reserves of gold, tin and coltan, an ore of rare metals used in making mobile phones - has displaced 140,000 civilians according to the United Nations.

Leveson to issue report on UK press abuses

LONDON (AP) ? After a yearlong inquiry full of sensational testimony, Britain's Lord Justice Brian Leveson is releasing his report Thursday into the culture and practices of the British press and his recommendations for future regulation to prevent phone hacking, data theft, bribery and other abuses.

The long-simmering scandal has already led to scores of arrests and some criminal charges. Dozens of cases have been settled out of court after victims of press intrusion sued. Here are some of the cases the Leveson inquiry has investigated:

MILLY DOWLER

The 13-year-old girl was abducted and murdered in 2002. In July 2011, it was reported that employees of Rupert Murdoch's News of the World tabloid had hacked into her telephone while police were still searching for her, giving her parents false hope that she was alive. Her mother, Sally Dowler, told the inquiry that when she could again leave a message on her missing daughter's phone, she shouted: "She's picked up the voice mails! ... She's alive!" Outrage over this case prompted Prime Minister David Cameron to commission the Leveson inquiry.

KATE and GERRY McCANN

Their young daughter Madeleine had vanished during a vacation in Portugal. The parents said newspapers were sympathetic at first but coverage later turned hostile. One story said the couple had sold their daughter into slavery, another that they had killed her and hid her body in a freezer. The couple successfully sued several British newspapers over suggestions that they had caused their daughter's death and then covered it up. Kate McCann described her dismay when extracts from her private diary ? in which she wrote to her missing daughter ? appeared in the News of the World in 2008. "I felt totally violated," she said. "There was absolutely no respect shown to me as a grieving mother or as a human being, or to my daughter."

HUGH GRANT

The popular actor testified that since "Four Weddings and a Funeral" made him a movie star, details of his hospital visits had been leaked, his garbage was rifled through, his ex-girlfriend and his infant daughter harassed. He said an article earlier this year in The Sun and the Daily Express about his visit to a hospital emergency room was a gross intrusion of privacy. "I think no one would expect their medical records to be made public or to be appropriated by newspapers for commercial profit. That is fundamental to our British sense of decency," he said.

J.K. ROWLING

The best-selling author of the Harry Potter series said she was completely unprepared for the tsunami of media attention when the first of her books became a sensational success. "It feels threatening to have people watching you," she said. Rowling said she had tried to keep her three children out of the media glare and was outraged when her eldest daughter came home from primary school with a letter from a journalist in her backpack. "I felt such a sense of invasion," she said.

CHARLOTTE CHURCH

A singer who became a star as a teenager, Church said she had been asked to perform at Rupert Murdoch's wedding to Wendi Deng and was offered either a $100,000 fee or a promise of favorable treatment from his newspapers. She took the latter but was hounded anyway. "In fact, Mr. Murdoch's newspapers have since been some of the worst offenders," she said. Between the ages of 16 and 20, Church said photographers were frequently stationed around the clock outside her home. Church said she was repeatedly chased in her car and suffered "the indignity of paparazzi trying to take photographs up my skirt and down my top."

CHARLOTTE HARRIS

A lawyer who represented several people who claimed to be hacking victims, Harris testified that she was a victim of "highly intrusive" surveillance by newspapers. The purpose, she said, "was to obtain information which could be made public in the hope of putting pressure on me, presumably to deter me and my clients from pursuing claims against the company."

Senate backs quicker withdrawal from Afghanistan

WASHINGTON (AP) ? Reflecting a war-weary nation, the Senate voted overwhelmingly Thursday for an accelerated withdrawal of U.S. forces from Afghanistan after more than a decade of fighting.

The strong bipartisan vote of 62-33 sends a clear message to President Barack Obama and the military as they engage in high-stakes talks about the pace of drawing down the 68,000 U.S. troops, with a White House announcement expected within weeks.

Although the vote was on a nonbinding amendment to a defense policy bill, its significance could not be discounted amid the current discussions.

Thirteen Republicans, including Sen. Richard Lugar of Indiana, the top GOP lawmaker on the Senate Foreign Relations Committee, backed the measure.

Sen. Jeff Merkley, D-Ore., its chief sponsor, argued that al-Qaida is stronger in other parts of the world and that nation-building in Afghanistan has gone off track. His measure endorsed Obama's timetable to withdraw all combat troops by the end of 2014 but pressed for a quicker pace, without specifying how that would be achieved.

"It is time to end this war, end the longest war in United States history," Merkley said during Senate debate.

The overall bill authorizes $631 billion for weapons, ships, aircraft and a 1.7 percent pay raise for military personnel. The White House threatened to veto the legislation in its current form, citing limits on the president's authority in handling detainees at the U.S. military facility at Guantanamo Bay, Cuba, and restrictions on cuts to the Air National Guard and Air Force Reserve.

The Senate hopes to wrap up its version of the bill by week's end. It then would have to be reconciled with the legislation the House passed in May. The House bill calls for Obama to maintain a force of at least 68,000 troops through the end of 2014.

The Senate eliminated one provision that had attracted White House objections. In a strong bipartisan vote Wednesday, the Senate voted to allow Pentagon investment in alternative fuels.

Oil prices up on brisk US Xmas sales, Greek deal

BANGKOK (AP) ? Robust retail sales in the U.S. ahead of the Christmas holiday helped boost oil prices above $88 a barrel on Tuesday.

Benchmark oil for January delivery was up 29 cents to $88.03 per barrel at midday Bangkok time in electronic trading on the New York Mercantile Exchange. The contract fell 54 cents to close at $87.74 a barrel on the Nymex on Monday.

Holiday shopping in the U.S. got off to a brisk start over the four-day Thanksgiving weekend, with a record 247 million shoppers visiting stores and websites ? a 9.2 percent increase over last year. Total spending over the four-day weekend totaled $59.1 billion, up 12.8 percent from 2011.

And it's not over. Americans took to the Web for "Cyber Monday," what is typically the biggest online shopping day of the year. Shoppers were expected to spend a record $1.5 billion on the Web.

Carl Larry of Oil Outlooks and Opinions said all that gift-buying bodes well for energy demand, which in turn pushes up prices.

"All of these goods being purchased start out at point A and eventually have to get to point B. That means more cargo jets, more trucks delivering good to stores and more consumers driving to get to them," Larry said in a market commentary.

Traders were also relieved that negotiations over the next installment on Greece's bailout proved successful. Greece will get the cash it needs to pay its bills while negotiators from the eurozone and the International Monetary Fund come together on a deal to reduce the country's debt load.

Brent crude, which is used to set prices for many international varieties of oil, rose 8 cents to $111 a barrel in London.

In other energy futures trading on Nymex:

? Wholesale gasoline rose 0.3 cents to $2.707 a gallon.

? Natural gas gained 8 cents to $3.738 per 1,000 cubic feet.

? Heating oil rose 0.6 cents to $3.066 a gallon.

95% Diana Vreeland: The Eye Has To Travel

All Critics (61) | Top Critics (24) | Fresh (58) | Rotten (3)

Her life, and her work, transcended what we think of as "fashion." Diana Vreeland: The Eye Has to Travel celebrates a unique and uniquely determined woman.

Many people remember some of Diana Vreeland's famous pronouncements ("I adore pink! It is the navy blue of India!") but few remember actually hearing her speak. The documentary Diana Vreeland: The Eye Has to Travel takes care of that.

For fashionphiles and pop culture vultures, there's much to devour.

Diana Vreeland is both history lesson and sentimental love letter to a fashion titan.

Legendary fashion editor Diana Vreeland was the consummate dreamer, a romantic who never looked back and propelled society forward.

A feast for fashion-history buffs and anyone who applauds unstoppable eccentricity.

She wanted you to look and look again, and this film is full of images which make you do just that.

There's something marvellously comic about her, an effect reinforced by her refined yet raucous baritone voice.

This pleasurable documentary is jammed packed with images from magazines, photoshoots and newsreels of a life well lived, but also lots of historical footage of the life Vreeland imagined she had too.

...more of an energetic and affectionate sketch than a revealing portrait of this oversized personality, but one has to wonder if the woman who celebrated glittering surfaces would have wanted it any other way.

This fascinating documentary reveals that Vreeland (who died in 1989, aged 86) was an original: a dynamic woman with energy to spare and an infectious lust for life

What makes this such a joy to watch is not just the timeline of fashion highlights, but Vreeland's unique perspective on life.

The filmmakers have done a fine job corralling so many fantastic tales from Vreeland's life.

"Diana Vreeland: The Eye Has to Travel" is an intriguing portrait of a true original; you only wish the movie had half the color and verve of its subject.

A lively movie, and in the case of its appearance-obsessed subject, it feels right that all it does is skim the surface.

[Vreeland's] influence on twentieth-century culture was large, and it's celebrated here with affection, dedication and skill--but very little critical detachment.

Though unwilling to dig too deeply into what seems an imperfect private life, it still serves as a splendid introduction to a unique personality.

A poignant portrait of an inveterate iconoclast who couldn't help but push the envelope.

Egypt's political foes dig in their heels

CAIRO (AP) ? Supporters and opponents of Egypt's president on Sunday grew more entrenched in their potentially destabilizing battle over the Islamist leader's move to assume near absolute powers, with neither side appearing willing to back down as the stock market plunged amid the fresh turmoil.

The standoff poses one of the hardest tests for the nation's liberal and secular opposition since Hosni Mubarak's ouster nearly two years ago. Failure to sustain protests and eventually force Mohammed Morsi to loosen control could consign it to long-term irrelevance.

Clashes between the two sides spilled onto the streets for a third day since the president issued edicts that make him immune to oversight of any kind, including that of the courts.

A teenager was killed and at least 40 people were wounded when a group of anti-Morsi protesters tried to storm the local offices of the political arm of the president's Muslim Brotherhood in the Nile Delta city of Damanhoor, according to security officials.

It was the first reported death from the street battles that erupted across much of the nation on Friday, the day after Morsi's decrees were announced. The officials, who spoke on condition of anonymity because they were not authorized to speak to the media, identified the boy as 15-year-old Islam Hamdi Abdel-Maqsood.

The tensions also dealt a fresh blow to the economy, which has suffered due to the problems plaguing the Arab world's most populous nation since Mubarak's ouster.

Egypt's benchmark EGX30 stock index dropped 9.59 percentage points Sunday in the first trading session since Morsi issued his decrees. The losses were among the biggest since the turbulent days and weeks immediately after Mubarak's ouster in a popular uprising last year. The loss in the value of shares was estimated at close to $5 billion.

The judiciary, the main target of the edicts, has pushed back, calling the decrees a power grab and an "assault" on the branch's independence. Judges and prosecutors stayed away from many courts in Cairo and other cities on Sunday.

But the nation's highest judicial body, the Supreme Judiciary Council, watered down its opposition to the decrees on Sunday. It told judges and prosecutors to return to work and announced that its members would meet with Morsi on Monday to try to persuade him to restrict immunity to major state decisions like declaring war or martial law or breaking diplomatic relations with foreign nations.

Morsi supporters insist that the measures were necessary to prevent the courts, which already dissolved the elected lower house of parliament, from further holding up moves to stability by disbanding the assembly writing the new constitution, as judges were considering doing. Both the parliament and the constitutional assembly are dominated by Islamists. Morsi accuses Mubarak loyalists in the judiciary of seeking to thwart the revolution's goals and barred the judiciary from disbanding the constitutional assembly or parliament's upper house.

Opposition activists, however, have been adamant since the crisis first erupted that they would not enter a dialogue with Morsi's regime before the decrees are rescinded.

Protesters also clashed with police at Cairo's Tahrir Square, the birthplace of the mass protests that toppled Mubarak, and in the side streets and avenues leading off the plaza. The Interior Ministry, which is in charge of the police, said 267 protesters have been arrested and 164 policemen injured since the unrest began a week ago, initially to mark the anniversary of street protests a year ago against the nation's then-military rulers. Forty-two protesters were killed in those demonstrations.

The ministry did not say how many protesters were injured in the latest clashes in Tahrir, but security officials put the figure at 260.

Hundreds of protesters staging a sit-in in Tahrir have vowed not to leave before Morsi rescinds his decrees. The two sides also have called for massive rival protests Tuesday in Cairo, signaling a protracted struggle.

Morsi's office issued an English-language statement late Sunday defending his decrees and repeating the argument he used when addressing supporters Friday outside his Cairo palace ? that they were designed to bolster the country's transition to democratic rule and dismantle Mubarak's old regime.

"The presidency reiterates the temporary nature of the said measures, which are not meant to concentrate powers," it said. The statement also pledged Morsi's commitment to engaging all political forces on the drafting of a new constitution. Secular and Christian members withdrew from the panel drafting the document, alleging that the Islamists who dominate the body have hijacked the process to produce a charter with an Islamist slant.

Nader Omran, of the Brotherhood's Freedom and Justice party, said any changes to the decrees were "out of the question" but Morsi might "make pledges, vows or addendums explaining his position to clarify the decrees."

He said Morsi would hand over his legislative powers to parliament's upper chamber once a new constitution is adopted in a nationwide referendum and ahead of parliamentary elections. The presidency did not confirm the claim, but doing so would leave the Egyptian leader with the state's executive and legislative powers until around April.

The move also has caused some internal discord among the Morsi camp, with one aide, Samer Marqous, already resigning to protest the "undemocratic" decree.

Another Morsi adviser Ayman al-Sayyad wrote on his Twitter account that the president met Sunday for the second time in as many days with his 17-member advisory council and three of his assistants.

"I think it (the meeting) produced a genuine realization of the gravity of the situation ... We were candid today in our meeting with the president and we now expect practical steps on the ground." He did not elaborate.

Leading Egyptian democracy advocate Mohammed ElBaradei, a Nobel Peace Laureate and a former director of the U.S. nuclear agency, warned Saturday of increasing turmoil that could potentially lead to the military stepping in unless Morsi rescinds his new powers.

Egypt's liberal and secular groups ? long divided, weakened and uncertain as Islamist parties rose to power in the months after the revolution ? are seeking to rally in response to the decrees as the stakes are high. The fractured opposition came together as the engine of the 18-day uprising that forced Mubarak to step down after 29 years in power, bringing millions out on the streets, but they have failed to recapture that energy after months of setbacks.

Morsi, meanwhile, already has backed down twice in high-profile battles with the judiciary in the five months he's been in office. The U.S.-trained engineer failed to challenge the court ruling dissolving parliament's powerful lower chamber and had to rescind his decision to fire the country's attorney-general, Mubarak-era appointee Abdel-Maguid Mahmoud, in October. He fired him on Thursday as part of his edicts.

Toddlers And Christmas Trees: Helping Them Get Along?

Random elegant Christmas tree photo.
Image from here.

Last year on the weekend after Thanksgiving, we went and picked out our first real live Christmas tree, with the hopes of making it a family tradition at the start of the holiday season each year. Thanksgiving weekend is here now ? but unlike last time around, when Lillian was a sleepy helpless little infant with pretty much zero interest in Christmas trees, we now have an inquisitive and increasingly mobile one-year-old on our hands. Which naturally leads one to wonder ? might this combination be a recipe for disaster? Is a Christmas tree even a good idea this year?

To shed some light on this question, I thought I?d search around the internet for any tips, advice, and strategies people may have found useful for ensuring the healthy coexistence of their babies or toddlers and Christmas trees. There?s quite a lot out there, and much of the advice seems to go something like this:

  • Get a smaller tree and put it up on a shelf or table
  • Block the tree off using furniture or a child gate
  • Keep the tree in another room closed off from the baby / toddler

But these kinds of tips, while being probably the most fool-proof, don?t seem to be quite what we?re looking for ? ideally we would like to have a standard-size Christmas tree in the living room by the fireplace like we did last year, and having to block it off with gates or furniture seems like it would dampen the atmosphere and eat up a lot of the remaining space in the already modestly-sized room.

Upon searching further, I came upon this article which has a number of discussion replies on this subject ? some a bit off-the-wall, like this little gem:

?My husband made my daughter terrified to touch the tree! She thought it would eat her. He would stick his hand in the tree and then scream like it was hurting him! It worked, she never touched it!?

I?ll admit, I laughed out loud when I first read that ? but as amusing as the strategy sounds, I think I?d be worried about giving our child some kind of long-lasting irrational fear of Christmas trees.

For some more serious and possibly helpful suggestions, the AAP has an article here with holiday safety tips, some tree-related. And there?s a good article on WikiHow about cat-proofing your Christmas tree which has a lot of tips that could just as easily apply to babies and toddlers.

One more interesting suggestion comes from this post by a blogger with three kids under age three, and it seems like a really simple and clever idea:

?My favorite and best trick of all is to line the whole bottom of your tree with jingle bells!!! On every branch around the bottom of my tree I have put small silver bells that jingle every time someone touches the tree. They are baby safe and when the tree moves or someone is touching it I hear it immediately!?

So after going through all of these tips and ideas, here is our current plan for this year?s Christmas tree:

  • Weigh down the stand to reduce the risk of the tree tipping over
  • Use only non-breakable ornaments, and nothing small enough to be a choking hazard
  • Securely fasten ornaments to branches using strings or ribbons instead of hooks
  • Select a fresh tree, keep it watered, and sweep / vacuum regularly to minimize stray needles
  • Try the jingle bell trick to create a built-in baby alarm

These measures seem like they should be pretty effective for preventing most of the problems that could potentially arise ? and worst case scenario, we can always have the backup plan of moving the tree down to the basement, or getting rid of it entirely, if things don?t seem to be working out.

What do you think? Have you ever had a Christmas tree with a mobile baby or young toddler in the house? How did things turn out? I?d love to hear any stories or advice on this matter!

Pope elevates six cardinals to choose successor

VATICAN CITY (AP) ? Pope Benedict XVI responded to criticism that the club of churchmen who will choose his successor is too Eurocentric, elevating six new cardinals from Colombia, India, Lebanon, Nigeria, the Philippines and the U.S. during a formal ceremony Saturday.

Benedict welcomed the prelates into the College of Cardinals during a short, hour-long ceremony in St. Peter's Basilica, telling them that their presence among the other red-robed prelates was a sign of the "unique, universal and all-inclusive identity" of the Catholic Church.

"In this consistory, I want to highlight in particular the fact that the church is the church of all peoples, and so she speaks in the various cultures of the different continents," he told the crowd.

The ceremony was both joyful and emotional: Manila Archbishop Luis Antonio Tagle, seen by many to be a rising star in the church, visibly choked up as he knelt before Benedict to receive his three-pointed red hat, or biretta, and gold ring. He wiped tears from his eyes as he returned to his place.

The archbishop of Abuja, Nigeria, Cardinal John Olorunfemi Onaiyekan, meanwhile, seemed to want to sit down and chat with each one of the dozens of cardinals that he greeted in the traditional exchange of peace that follows the formal elevation rite.

Benedict has said that with this "little consistory," he was essentially completing his last cardinal-making ceremony held in February, when he elevated 22 cardinals, the vast majority of them European archbishops and Vatican bureaucrats.

The College of Cardinals remains heavily European even with the new additions: Of the 120 cardinals under age 80 and thus eligible to vote in a conclave to elect a new pope, more than half ? 62 ? are European.

Critics have complained that the "princes of the church" no longer represents the Catholic Church today, since Catholicism is growing in Asia and Africa but is in crisis in much of Europe.

The issue of numbers is significant since these are the men who will elect the next pope from within their ranks. Will the next pontiff hail from the southern hemisphere, where two-thirds of the world's Catholics live? Or will the papacy return to Italy, which has 28 voting-age cardinals, following a Polish and German pope?

While there's no rule that papal ballots are cast along geographic lines, the new cardinals do give an eventual conclave a slightly more multinational air: Latin America, which boasts half of the world's Catholics, now has 21 voting-age cardinals; North America, 14; Africa, 11; Asia, 11; and Oceana, one.

Among the six new cardinals is Archbishop James Harvey, the American prefect of the papal household. As prefect, Harvey was the direct superior of the pope's former butler, Paolo Gabriele, who is serving an 18 month prison sentence in a Vatican jail for stealing the pope's private papers and leaking them to a reporter in the greatest Vatican security breach in modern times.

The Vatican spokesman has denied Harvey, 63, from Milwaukee, is leaving because of the scandal. But on the day the pope announced Harvey would be made cardinal, he also said he would leave the Vatican to take up duties as the archpriest of one of the Vatican's four Roman basilicas. Such a face-saving promotion-removal is not an uncommon Vatican personnel move.

Harvey's departure has led to much speculation about who would replace him in the delicate job of organizing the pope's daily schedule and arranging audiences.

Aside from Harvey, Tagle, and Onaiyekan, the new cardinals are: Bogota, Colombia Archbishop Ruben Salazar Gomez; the Patriarch of Antioch of the Maronites in Lebanon, His Beatitude Bechara Boutros Rai; and the major Archbishop of the Trivandrum of the Siro-Malankaresi in India, His Beatitude Baselios Cleemis Thottunkal.

Later Saturday after the ceremony, the cardinals received visitors in the frescoed rooms of the Apostolic Palace, which opens its doors to the general public for these special cardinal-making occasions.

Cardinals serve as the pope's closest advisers, but their main task is to elect a new pope. And with Benedict, 85, slowing down, that task is ever more present. For the second time, the consistory ceremony was greatly trimmed back, lasting just over an hour to spare the pope the fatigue of a lengthy ceremony.

He will, however, celebrate Mass on Sunday with his new cardinals.

While Benedict didn't mention the cardinals' primary task in his remarks, he did remind them that the scarlet of their cassock and hat that they wear symbolizes the blood that cardinals must be willing to shed to remain faithful to the church.

"From now on you will be even more closely and intimately linked to the See of Peter," he said.

The six new cardinals are all under age 80. Their nominations bring the number of voting-age cardinals to 120, 67 of whom were named by Benedict, all but ensuring that his successor will be chosen from a group of like-minded prelates.

Saturday's consistory marks the first time in decades that not a single European or Italian has been made a cardinal ? a statistic that has not gone unnoticed in Italy. Italy still has the lions' share of cardinals, though, with 28 voting-age "princes" of the church.

Nokia Transit update brings segmented route maps, relative times to Windows Phone and Symbian

Nokia still has a ways to go before directions in Nokia Transit (also known as Nokia Transport) are on par with Google's, but the Finnish crew is clearly on the right track with a fresh update to its Windows Phone and Symbian apps. Travelers now see segmented route maps that provide a closer look at key points in the trip as well as more focused directions at those crucial moments. The app is that much more savvy about travel times, as well -- the forward-thinking can at last plan trips days in advance, and there's new options for relative arrival times as well as a simplified destination history. Symbian even gets its own specific update with long-overdue support for route updates in-app, rather than through upgrading the app itself. Lumia owners on Windows Phone 8 devices can get the spruced-up version of Transit or Transport today as a regular update; Symbian and Windows Phone 7 users willing to live on the edge can get roughly equivalent betas at the same time.

Thai anti-government protesters rally in Bangkok

BANGKOK (AP) ? Anti-government protesters calling for Thai Prime Minister Yingluck Shinawatra to step down launched a rally in Bangkok on Saturday that authorities feared would grow into the biggest demonstration the country has seen since she took office last year.

The rally, which was expected to draw tens of thousands of protesters, was mostly peaceful in its early stages. Police, however, fired tear gas to disperse between 50 to 100 people who tried to break through a line of concrete barricades erected on a street near the protest site.

Earlier in the week, Yingluck ordered nearly 17,000 police to deploy and invoked a special security law, citing concerns that the rally could turn violent. She also accused demonstrators of seeking to overthrow her elected government.

The demonstration underscores the still-simmering political divisions that have split the country since the army toppled Yingluck's brother Thaksin Shinawatra in a 2006 military coup.

Saturday's protest was organized by a royalist group calling itself "Pitak Siam" ? or "Protect Thailand." Led by retired army Gen. Boonlert Kaewprasit, the group accuses Yingluck's administration of corruption, ignoring insults to the revered monarchy and being a puppet of Thaksin.

Addressing several thousand protesters on the rally's central stage on Saturday, Boonlert vowed the demonstration would remain peaceful. But he said: "I promise that Pitak Siam will succeed in driving this government out."

He then led the crowd in a chant: "Yingluck, get out! Yingluck, get out!"

The rally was being held at Bangkok's Royal Plaza, a public space near Parliament that has been used by protesters in the past.

Police allowed protesters into the site, and two roads leading to it were open. But in an effort to control access, security forces erected concrete barriers on another road leading to Royal Plaza. When between 50 to 100 protesters tried to break through one of the barriers, a contingent of around 500 police fired tear gas and beat them back with batons.

While Pitak Siam is a newcomer to Thailand's protest scene, it is linked to the well-known "Yellow Shirt" protesters, whose rallies led to Thaksin's overthrow. The same movement later toppled a Thaksin-allied elected government after occupying and shutting down Bangkok's two airports for a week in 2008.

Thaksin remains a divisive figure in Thai politics. The Yellow Shirts and their allies say he is personally corrupt and accuse him of seeking to undermine the popular constitutional monarch ? charges Thaksin denies.

Yingluck was taking Saturday's rally seriously. Her Cabinet invoked the Internal Security Act on Thursday in three Bangkok districts around the protest site, and she later addressed the nation to explain the move, citing concerns of violence.

The security act allows authorities to close roads, impose curfews and ban use of electronic devices in designated areas. Measures began taking effect Thursday night, with police closing roads around Yingluck's office, the Government House, and placing extra security at the homes of senior officials, including the prime minister.

In a nationally televised address Thursday, Yingluck said protest leaders "seek to overthrow an elected government and democratic rule ... and there is evidence that violence may be used to achieve those ends."

National police chief spokesman Maj. Gen. Piya Uthayo said Friday that 16,800 police officers had been called in from around the country to provide security for the rally.

Boonlert, the protest group's leader, is best known for his role as president of the Thailand Boxing Association. His name is unfamiliar in the anti-Thaksin protest movement, but his message appears to have resonated with Yellow Shirt supporters who have laid low in recent years after Yingluck's party won the last elections.

Analysts said they did not view the protest as an immediate threat to Yingluck's government, but were watching it closely.

"Anytime you have tens of thousands of people converging, assembling in a central Bangkok location, it becomes a government stability concern," said Thitinan Pongsudhirak, a political scientist at Bangkok's Chulalongkorn University.

But he added: "I think it's a serious concern more than a serious threat."

Thailand has been gripped by bouts of political instability since 2006, with Thaksin's supporters and opponents taking turns to spar over who has the right to rule the country.

The most violent episode came in 2010, when Thaksin's "Red Shirt" supporters led a two-month occupation of central Bangkok to demand the resignation of an anti-Thaksin government. The protests sparked a military crackdown that left at least 91 people dead and more than 1,700 injured.

Thaksin has lived in self-imposed exile since 2008, when he jumped bail to evade a corruption conviction and two-year jail term. He retains huge popularity among the rural poor, who want to see him pardoned and returned to power. But he is reviled by the urban elite and educated middle class, who see him as authoritarian and a threat to the monarchy.

Buoyed by Thaksin's political machine, Yingluck was elected by a landslide victory in August 2011. She initially was criticized for her lack of political experience ? she was an executive in Shinawatra family businesses ? but has won praise for leading the country through one of its longest peaceful periods in recent years.
