Face-to-face negotiations favor the powerful

Apr. 9, 2013 ? If you are negotiating with someone who has more power than you it is a good idea to avoid face-to-face meetings.

That is the conclusion of research presented today, Wednesday 10 April 2013, by Michael Taylor from Imperial College London at the Annual Conference of the British Psychological Society in Harrogate.

Michael Taylor and his fellow researchers conducted two studies in which the same negotiation was conducted face-to-face and in a sophisticated 3D virtual simulation. In the first study 74 people took part in a two-sided negotiation in which one party had more power than the other. In the second, 63 people conducted a three-sided negotiation where they were playing the part of people at different levels in a hierarchy.

The results of the first study showed that the side with less power did better in the virtual negotiations than the face-to-face ones. In the second study, the least powerful side outperformed the other two in the virtual negotiations but not in the face-to-face ones.

Michael Taylor says: "It looks as though it is a good idea for less powerful parties to negotiate from remote locations rather than face-to-face. When people negotiate from further apart, it affects their whole way of thinking. This can mean the contextual details of the negotiations, such as power hierarchies, have less impact on the outcome. This has implications for team negotiation and shared decision-making in the workplace."

'Friendly' Lone Star suspect harbored stabbing fantasies

Lone Star College student Dylan Quick was arrested Tuesday after allegedly stabbing more than a dozen students, and authorities are now saying he had been planning the attack for a long time, having "had fantasies of stabbing people" since he was "in elementary school." NBC's Jay Gray reports.

By Elizabeth Chuck, Staff Writer, NBC News

Faculty members at his college said he got good grades. His co-workers at the local library had kind words to say about him. Neighbors remembered him as a friendly kid growing up.

When Dylan Quick, the suspect in Tuesday?s stabbing spree at Lone Star College in Texas, was arrested, it came as a shock to seemingly everybody who knew him ? or thought that they knew him.

?He has shared with us that he has had fantasies about stabbing people since the age of 8,? Harris County Sheriff Adrian Garcia told reporters at a news conference on Wednesday about Quick. ?He has been planning this event for some time.?

The stabbings at Lone Star, located in the Houston suburb of Cyprus, occurred Tuesday morning just after 11 a.m. Garcia said investigators believe the victims were randomly selected, and said a ?razor utility knife? made by X-acto was used in the attacks.

It?s unclear what caused Quick to allegedly plan and execute the attack that led to 14 of his classmates being wounded.

"There are no signs that he was a problem student," Dr. Audre Levy, president of Lone Star College's CyFair campus, said at Wednesday's news conference. "I do know that he worked in the library, and the library staff had very fond things to say about him."

His next-door neighbor in Houston, Michael Lincoln, told The Houston Chronicle that Quick always struck him as a ?very friendly kid.? But he said that he is ?real quiet and keeps to himself.?

He told the paper that just last week, Quick helped him pull down a branch that had fallen on his roof. Other neighbors also described him as polite and helpful.

According to The Chronicle, Quick was born hearing-impaired, and went to a mainstream school in Houston until 2004, and then was home-schooled.

Handout / Harris County Sheriff's Office via Reuters

Garcia said on Wednesday that authorities hadn?t found any evidence that Quick had been bullied. He had worked in the town?s public library for a year and was just featured in his school?s ?student spotlight? blog on April 1, which said Quick was also in a book club. The blog has since been taken down, but screenshots captured by KPRC.com, NBC?s affiliate in Houston, show that Quick had big plans for his future, according to the profile: to transfer to the University of Houston after getting his associate?s degree from Lone Star, and eventually pursuing a career in accounting.

Authorities apprehended Quick ? a 20-year-old with curly, red-hair ? shortly after the stabbings were reported from inside the health science building at the school?s CyFair campus.

The entire incident only lasted "a couple of minutes. That's how fast it happened," Garcia said.

Inside Quick?s backpack, investigators found another precision knife that wasn?t used in the attack, he said.

Investigators described Quick as matter-of-fact during their questioning.

Harris County Sheriff Adrian Garcia said in a press conference that the Lone Star Community College stabbing suspect had fantasized about stabbing people since the age of eight and that he had planned the event for "some time."

"He has been very forthcoming," Garcia said.

Quick has been charged with three counts of aggravated assault. He was ordered to undergo a psychiatric evaluation on Wednesday. A spokesperson for the Harris County district attorney told NBC News his family had hired an attorney for him. Investigators executed a search warrant on Quick's house, confiscating his computer and other items to try to get an idea of what may have prompted him to allegedly plan the attack.

All of the victims in the attack are expected to recover.

China finds bird flu in five new sites: OIE

PARIS (Reuters) - China found new cases of bird flu in five live bird markets in the eastern part of the country, a report posted on the website of the World Animal Health Organisation OIE showed on Wednesday.

China said the H7N9 avian influenza virus was found on Wednesday in three live bird markets in Jiangsu province, one in Anhui province and one in Zhejiang province, the report said. It did not specify in what kind of birds the virus was found.

The three previous outbreaks reported last week were all in China's financial hub Shanghai.

Nine people have died out of 33 confirmed human cases of the virus, according to data from the National Health and Family Planning Commission on Wednesday.

The latest H7N9 victim was from Anhui province, the official Xinhua news agency said. Among the new cases are several from Shanghai, Jiangsu and Zhejiang provinces, at least one of whom is dangerously ill, it said.

Reports submitted by China's farm ministry to the OIE last week showed that the first case of H7N9 in birds was found on April 4 on a pigeon destined for human consumption in a wholesale market in Shanghai.

Authorities also discovered seven infected chickens in the same market, which lead to the culling of 20,536 poultry in total.

The next day, one infected chicken was found at the Jingchuan market in Shanghai, and two chickens and two pigeons were discovered at the Fengzhuang market, also in Shanghai, reports showed.

Member countries of the OIE have the obligation to declare bird flu cases when found in domestic animals, or when they are highly pathogenic, which is not the case in this instance.

Stocks rise; Dow hits another record

Stocks rose on Wall Street Tuesday with the Dow Jones industrial average closing at another record high.?Materials and energy stocks led the gains following a surge in prices for commodities like copper.

Materials and energy companies led the stock market higher Tuesday, sending the Dow Jones industrial average to its second all-time high in a week.

The Dow closed at 14,673.46, a gain of 59.98 points, or 0.4 percent. The Standard & Poor's 500 index also rose 0.4 percent, closing less than two points below its own all-time high set April 2.

The prices of metals like copper, gold and silver have rebounded this week after slumping for the first three months of the year on waning demand. Oil is also rising following a sharp decline last week.

"You're seeing some pretty decent action in the overall market, with today's leadership coming from the basic materials sector," said Robert Pavlik, chief market strategist at Banyan Partners. "It's an area of the market that does represent some value because it's underperformed."

The rally in basic materials such as precious metals was caused by a weakening of the dollar against other currencies, HSBC analyst Howard Wen said. Commodities are typically priced in dollars and a decline in the currency allows overseas buyers to purchase materials at lower prices.

Materials companies were the biggest gainers of the 10 industry groups in the S&P 500, rising 1.1 percent. Energy companies posted the second best return, advancing 0.8 percent. Those two groups have been among the weakest in the market this year.

On Tuesday the S&P 500 rose 5.54 points to 1,568.61. The index closed at a record high of 1,570.25 on April 2. The Nasdaq composite gained 15.61 points, or 0.5 percent, to 3,237.86.

The gains suggested that the Dow and S&P 500 may be poised to break out of a trading pattern they've followed for the last three weeks.

Stocks have mostly moved sideways since the middle of March. The Dow has alternated between small gains and losses after starting the year on a tear. Signs of slowing growth and concerns about the outlook for Europe had checked investors' confidence.

As companies report results this week, investors will be looking to see whether they are feeling any impact from government spending cuts that kicked in recently, said Jim Russell, investment director at U.S. Bank. They will also want to know what effect there will might from the ongoing debt crisis in Europe.

Alcoa, traditionally the first company in the Dow to report results, was flat at $8.39 after the company posted its earnings late Monday. Online auto retailer CarMax, home goods retailer Bed Bath & Beyond and the banks Wells Fargo and JPMorgan Chase report later this week.

"The market is looking for companies to fill in those blanks," said Russell.

Cliff's Natural Resources, an iron ore mining company, rose $1.66, or 8.8 percent, to $20.45. The company's stock is still down 47 percent this year. Freeport-McMoRan Copper & Gold, another mining company, was up $1.34, or 4.1 percent, at $33.76.

First Solar soared after the solar panel maker issued a better-than-expected forecast for its 2013 results and solid predictions for the following two years, helped by continued growth in shipments. The stock price rose $12.31, or 46 percent, to $39.35.

Small company stocks lagged the market. The Russell 2000 index two points, or 0.2 percent, to 929.34. The index has slumped this month after rising 12 percent in the first quarter and performing better than both the Dow and S&P 500.

While stocks are struggling to extend their gains from the start of the year, bonds have rallied.

The yield on the 10-year Treasury note was unchanged at 1.75 percent Tuesday. However, the benchmark rate has fallen from a high of 2.06 percent reached March 11 as demand for low-risk assets increases.

iPhone maker Hon Hai sees sudden 19 percent sales drop in 2013 Q1

Reuters is reporting that Hon Hai, the manufacturer that everyone else knows as Foxconn Technology, saw its sales tumble in the first quarter of this year. In the post-Christmas season, the iPhone maker brought in $26.9 billion -- a fall of 19 percent compared to the same quarter last year. It's a strange turn of events, seeing as 2012 turned out to be a record year for the company, but Reuters interprets the figures as being a symptom of a drop in demand for the Apple products that Hon Hai builds and is largely dependent on -- an issue that has been brewing for a while now.

Kelly Clarkson and Brandon Blackstock at the 48th Annual Academy of Country Music Awards in Las Vegas on April 7.

By Us Weekly

Wonder if Kelly Clarkson ever imagined her wedding to be a moment like this! The "American Idol" alum revealed at the ACM Awards on Sunday that her country crooner pal Blake Shelton will not only sing at her upcoming wedding -- he'll be officiating!

Clarkson, 30, told "Entertainment Tonight's" Nancy O'Dell that "The Voice" mentor will conduct her wedding to fiance Brandon Blackstock (No further details were provided).

PHOTOS: 2012's celebrity engagements

And rightfully so! Last December, Shelton, 36, told Hollyscoop that he had a huge hand in making sure that Clarkson's fiance popped the question in a timely manner.

"I told Brandon, man, you need to grow up and figure out that you need to marry this girl," he told the site at the time. "I am going on the record saying, I will do the music at the wedding or whatever you want to do, I'll be that guy. I will play for four hours if I have to, cause you need to get your head out of your ass and ask that girl to marry you."

PHOTOS: Blake and Miranda's love story

Clarkson excitedly announced her engagement to Blackstock (who is Reba McEntire's stepson) earlier that month via Twitter, with a simple tweet and a photo of her impressive canary yellow diamond ring.

"I wanted y'all to know! Happiest night of my life last night!" she tweeted on Dec. 15. "I am so lucky and am with the greatest man ever."

'It was a sign': Lapsed Catholics lured back by Pope Francis

Gregorio Borgia / AP

Pope Francis waves as he is driven through a crowd in St. Peter's Square prior to the start of his weekly general audience on Wednesday.

By Tracy Connor, Staff Writer, NBC News

Twenty million Americans consider themselves lapsed Catholics, but Pope Francis is convincing many to test the holy waters again with his bold gestures and common touch.

After years of disenchantment with the church's hierarchy and teachings, former members of the flock say they are willing to give the Vatican a second chance under new leadership.

Dallas teacher Marilyn Rosa is one of them.

"He's being studied very closely," Cardinal Edward Egan of the Archdiocese of New York said of Pope Francis, added that wherever he goes, priests want to know how the Pope will change the Catholic Church and what the implications will be. Cardinal Edward Egan is interviewed by TODAY's Lester Holt.

"It was a sign," Rosa, 57, said of the Argentine Jesuit's election as pontiff last month. "It was like a miracle."

Born and raised Catholic, Rosa attended parochial schools and had a church wedding for her first marriage. Over the years, she drifted away from the religion that had been such an integral part of her Puerto Rican family's life.

She questioned the relevance of church policies in the modern world. As a divorced woman, she felt cast out. The pedophile-priest scandals disgusted her.

Three years ago, she quit going to Mass and joined an evangelical church. But she didn't feel at home and she started to wonder how she could fill the void.

"The day the pope got elected, I turned on the TV and when I learned he was Latin, I went crazy at home," said Rosa.

"When they started to talk about how he lived by himself and didn't move into the archbishop's residence, how he took the bus to work, I said, 'I know God is talking to me. This is the man we needed.'"

On Palm Sunday, she and her second husband "reverted," attending services at Dallas' St. Pius X Catholic Church.

"It was packed. I had to stand up the whole time. But I felt so happy. It was like a revival," she said.

Ron Feldman

Father Peter Mussett of St. Thomas Aquinas Catholic Center in Boulder, Colo., had five people tell him they were returning to the faith in a week because of Pope Francis.

Rosa has kept going to back to St. Pius, encouraged by what she's seen of the pope: from the simple white robe he wears to his rejection of the opulent papal apartment in favor of a spartan guest house.

"He's not letting himself be controlled by the rest of the church," Rosa said. "He's his own man."

Embrace of poor, emphasis on service
It's unknown how many others have joined Rosa around the country and globe and the vast majority of lapsed Catholics have not been enticed back. In the U.S., that's a huge pool of potential "new" members for an institution challenged by secularism and rival religions.

A 2009 report by the Pew Forum on Religion and Public Life estimated one in 10 adults in the U.S. was raised Catholic but has broken with the church. Its teachings on?abortion, homosexuality, birth control and treatment of women were often cited as reasons.

Pope Francis hasn't given any hint of radical change on those issues, but his man-of-the-people persona is appealing to some of the unfaithful.

Tom Peterson, president of Catholics Come Home, which airs ads aimed at the lapsed, said his website traffic tripled the day of the election, adding several thousand visitors. It's been double ever since.

Some interest could stem from the hubbub surrounding the selection of any pontiff, but Peterson thinks Francis' "love for the poor and his humility is exciting people to a great extent."

Father Peter Mussett, pastor of the St. Thomas Aquinas Catholic Center, which serves the University of Colorado at Boulder, agrees.

Marcos Brindicci / Reuters

Cardinal Jorge Bergoglio of Argentina was elected to lead the Catholic Church following the resignation of Pope Benedict XVI.?

"I had five people in a week who were saying, 'Pope Francis has inspired me to return to my faith,'" he said. "It's pretty remarkable."

Brian O'Neill, 48, an Irish-American cop from Washington State, went to Catholic elementary school and a Jesuit high school but hasn't practiced since graduating from a secular college. He says that could change soon.

The Vatican's stance on social issues, along with the gilded lifestyle of some higher-ups previously drove O'Neill away. Francis' embrace of the poor and his background as a service-minded Jesuit might bring the father of two back.

"I was shocked and amazed when he started doing those things -- you know, 'No Popemobile for me,'" said O'Neill, who wrote a column for his local newspaper about possibly returning to Catholicism.

He said that while Francis' views on church teachings might still be far from his own, his election heralds change.

"When the church says that's the guy we're going to put on St. Peter's throne, that says enough about where the church wants to go," O'Neill said. "Will I go back? I'm planning on it -- if I can find a good service."

'He's another retro pope'
Last weekend, when he was formally installed as bishop of Rome, the pope used the opportunity to appeal to defectors, urging them to come back to the fold.

The News Tribune (Tacoma)

Brian O'Neill, a cop and father of two from Washington state, is a lapsed Catholic who is considering returning to the church because of Pope Francis.

It will take more than an invitation for Kathy Budreski, though. The 70-year-old left Catholicism after the abuse scandal and has been attending a Unitarian church in Cape Cod.

She was heartened to see the cardinals pick a pope from South America, and loved seeing Francis hug a little boy with cerebral palsy after Easter Mass but says he's not a progressive.

"He has a big heart and he loves the poor people, but he's not going to do anything to change the stance of the church on birth control and gay rights," she said.

"I don't see him as a mover and shaker. He has some wonderful qualities but he's another retro pope."

Cardinals from around the world gathered in the Vatican to elect the next leader of the Roman Catholic Church.

Syrian militants pledge allegiance to al-Qaida

BEIRUT (AP) ? The leader of an Islamic extremist rebel group in Syria pledged allegiance on Wednesday to al-Qaida and its leader for the first time.

Abu Mohammad al-Golani, head of Jabhat al-Nusra or the Nusra Front, confirmed his rebel group was tied to al-Qaida in Iraq in an audio message posted on militant websites.

Al-Qaida in Iraq said Tuesday it had joined forces with the Nusra Front ? the most effective of a disparate patchwork of rebel groups fighting to topple Syrian President Bashar Assad. He said the new alliance would be called the Islamic State in Iraq and the Levant.

The Levant is the traditional name referring to the region from southern Turkey to Egypt on the eastern Mediterranean.

However, al-Golani said he was not consulted ahead of the merger announcement. He did not deny they had merged, but left the point unclear.

He said the leadership of Nusra Front "was not aware of this announcement and heard about only it through media outlets. If the speech is true, we were not asked or consulted on it."

The alliance, if confirmed, would be an even stronger opponent in the fight to topple Assad and become a dominant player in what eventually replaces his regime.

The merger was announced by Abu Bakr al-Baghdadi, the leader of the Islamic State of Iraq or al-Qaida in Iraq. His 21-minute audio message was posted on militant websites late Monday.

A website linked to Nusra Front known as al-Muhajir al-Islami ? the Islamic emigrant ? confirmed the merger.

But al-Golani said the announcement was premature and that his group will continue to use Jabhat al-Nusra as its name.

"The banner of the Front will remain unchanged despite our pride in the banner of the State and those who carried it and sacrificed and shed their blood for it," he said in a reference to al-Qaida in Iraq.

Al-Golani's message was first reported by the SITE monitoring service for militant groups.

In the audio message, he pledged allegiance to the leader of the al-Qaida terror network, Ayman al-Zawahri.

Earlier this week, al-Zawahiri urged Islamic fighters in Syria to unite in their efforts to oust Assad.

Nusra Front, which has welcomed militants from across the Muslim world into its ranks, has made little secret of its links across the Iraqi border. But until now, it has not officially declared itself to be part of al-Qaida.

In the recording, al-Golani acknowledges his followers receive assistance and training from al-Qaida in Iraq.

The Syrian group, which wants to oust Assad and replace his regime with an Islamic state, first emerged in a video posted online in January 2012. Since then, it has demonstrated its prowess ? and ruthlessness ? on the battlefield.

It has claimed responsibility for many of the deadliest suicide bombings against Syrian government institutions and military facilities. The group's success helped fuel a surge in its popularity among rebel fighters, although it has also emerged as a source of friction with more moderate and secular brigades in Syria.

The group also has tried to provide basic services in the parts of northern Syria under rebel control, including security and food to civilians struggling to survive.

Striped like a badger: New genus of bat identified in South Sudan

Apr. 9, 2013 ? Researchers have identified a new genus of bat after discovering a rare specimen in South Sudan.

With wildlife personnel under the South Sudanese Ministry of Wildlife Conservation and Tourism, Bucknell Associate Professor of Biology DeeAnn Reeder and Fauna & Flora International (FFI) Programme Officer Adrian Garside were leading a team conducting field research and pursuing conservation efforts when Reeder spotted the animal in Bangangai Game Reserve.

"My attention was immediately drawn to the bat's strikingly beautiful and distinct pattern of spots and stripes. It was clearly a very extraordinary animal, one that I had never seen before," recalled Reeder. "I knew the second I saw it that it was the find of a lifetime."

After returning to the United States, Reeder determined the bat was the same as one originally captured in nearby Democratic Republic of the Congo in 1939 and named Glauconycteris superba, but she and colleagues did not believe that it fit with other bats in the genus Glauconycteris.

"After careful analysis, it is clear that it doesn't belong in the genus that it's in right now," Reeder said. "Its cranial characters, its wing characters, its size, the ears -- literally everything you look at doesn't fit. It's so unique that we need to create a new genus."

In the paper, "A new genus for a rare African vespertilionid bat: insights from South Sudan" just published by the journal ZooKeys, Reeder, along with co-authors from the Smithsonian Institution and the Islamic University in Uganda, placed this bat into a new genus -- Niumbaha. The word means "rare" or "unusual" in Zande, the language of the Azande people in Western Equatoria State, where the bat was captured. The bat is just the fifth specimen of its kind ever collected, and the first in South Sudan, which gained its independence in 2011.

"To me, this discovery is significant because it highlights the biological importance of South Sudan and hints that this new nation has many natural wonders yet to be discovered. South Sudan is a country with much to offer and much to protect," said Matt Rice, FFI's South Sudan country director. FFI is using its extensive experience of working in conflict and post-conflict countries to assist the South Sudanese government as it re-establishes the country's wildlife conservation sector and is also helping to rehabilitate selected protected areas through training and development of park staff and wildlife service personnel, road and infrastructure development, equipment provision, and supporting research work. || Read more about FFI's conservation efforts in South Sudan here.

The team's research in South Sudan was made possible by a $100,000 grant that Reeder received from the Woodtiger Fund. The private research foundation recently awarded Reeder another $100,000 dollar grant to continue her research this May and to support FFI's conservation programs.

"Our discovery of this new genus of bat is an indicator of how diverse the area is and how much work remains," Reeder added. "Understanding and conserving biodiversity is critical in many ways. Knowing what species are present in an area allows for better management. When species are lost, ecosystem-level changes ensue. I'm convinced this area is one in which we need to continue to work."

Google Street View Hyperlapse animates your planned journey, shows the places you'll go

Taking Google's maps and Street View imagery, design firm Teehan+Lax Labs has moulded them into an unofficial time-lapse animation site. While there's some predetermined (and beautiful) routes offered up on the maker's site, you can also plug in your own favorite journeys from A to B -- perfect for reliving that milk run. If you're looking for something a little more aspirational, however, we've added a video of one of the lab's examples after the break.

Senate confirms Mary Jo White as SEC chair?

WASHINGTON -- Mary Jo White, a former federal prosecutor known for being tough on mobsters and terrorists, was confirmed Monday by the Senate as the new head of the Securities and Exchange Commission Monday by the Senate.

White received wide bipartisan support in the Senate thanks to her reputation as a former U.S. Attorney for the Southern District of New York.

It's a critical time for SEC, the agency tasked with policing Wall Street and writing new rules of the road for financial markets. The agency still has much work remaining as it seeks to finalize rules required by the 2010 Dodd-Frank Wall Street reform law, particularly in the areas of over-the-counter derivatives and credit-rating agencies.

The agency is also behind on completing capital-raising rules required by more recent legislation, the 2012 Jumpstart Our Business Startups Act, which relaxes certain securities regulations to help small businesses raise funds and go public.

The SEC has been stuck in a rut since former chair Mary Schapiro left in December, leaving the five-member panel divided between two Democrats and two Republicans.

Since then, the SEC has done little in the way of rulemaking.

What little criticism White has received so far has mostly been about her ties to Wall Street.

After working as a prosecutor, she became a partner at Debevoise & Plimpton where she represented high-profile clients including JPMorgan, former Bank of America CEO Ken Lewis, UBS and accounting giant Deloitte & Touche LLP.

Some, including Ohio Democrat Senator Sherrod Brown, have raised concerns that this "Wall Street bias" could harm the SEC, an agency that has been accused by some of striking weak settlements with Wall Street banks over their behavior during the 2007-2009 financial crisis.

Little is also known thus far about White's views on securities regulatory policy and how she will direct critical rule-makings including a controversial plan to reform the $2.6 trillion money market fund industry.

The Senate's vote on Monday only allows for White to fill out the remainder of Schapiro's term, which expires in June 2014.

Microsoft to sell Mediaroom IPTV business to Ericsson | Internet ...

Microsoft is selling its Mediaroom business to Ericsson.

(Credit: Microsoft) Ericsson plans to buy Microsoft's Mediaroom IPTV platform business so that Microsoft can tune in on its Xbox gaming system.

The companies didn't disclose the purchase price, but a person familiar with the deal terms said the price was "just south of $200 million." The deal should close in the second half of the year.

One of the next big battlegrounds among industry players is video. Many companies, such as Amazon and Netflix, already provide content, but others are looking to provide a full package to consumers. Chip maker Intel is building an IPTV service and set-top box, while Apple is reportedly prepping its own system. Game console makers also are looking at the sector, with Sony and Microsoft both seeking to provide more programming for their customers.

Mediaroom is the software that powers many of the world's leading Internet-delivered television services, such as AT&T's U-verse, and Deutsche Telekom's Entertain. More than 22 million set-top boxes in 11 million homes around the world use Mediaroom technology. Ericsson, the world's largest maker of wireless networks, noted the acquisition will make it the leading provider of IPTV and multiscreen offerings, with a market share of more than 25 percent.

For Microsoft, the deal removes any distraction or conflict with pushing TV on its Xbox console. While Xbox started out as a gaming machine, the majority of the 76 million users worldwide spend more time viewing entertainment than playing games, said Yusuf Mehdi, corporate vice president of marketing, strategy, and business for Microsoft's interactive entertainment operations, during an All Things D conference earlier this year.

"With the sale of Mediaroom, Microsoft is dedicating all TV resources to Xbox in a continued mission to make it the premium entertainment service that delivers all the games and entertainment consumers want -- whether on a console, phone, PC, or tablet," Mehdi said in a blog post today.

He added that there are 76 million Xbox 360 consoles around the world and 46 million Xbox LIVE members. Microsoft is expected to unveil the next generation of the Xbox sometime this year, possibly as soon as next month. The device is likely to attract new users, as well as include new features to attract viewers, not just gamers.

The company has said that it's working on providing interactive TV through Xbox, including live events, reality shows, and scripted programs with an interactive twist. Instead of going it alone, Microsoft is trying to partner with content creators, studios, labels, networks, content aggregators, operators, and distributors.

"We believe the future of home entertainment is one where TV becomes more simple, tailored, and intelligent," Mehdi said. "We believe the best is yet to come for this industry."

Microsoft declined to comment further about the deal.

Ericsson, meanwhile, plans to integrate Mediaroom with its current products to extend the software beyond the set-top box to mobile and other devices, said Per Borgklint, senior vice president and head of business unit support solutions at Ericsson.

"Today Mediaroom is only on set-top boxes, but we at Ericsson have developed multiscreen solutions that have been integrated already on customer premises on the existing Mediaroom solution," he told CNET.

Ericsson will continue to target mobile operators with the service, Borgklint said, with the belief that all will need a video strategy and something to manage and secure the delivery of those services.

The company will hire additional employees for Mediaroom, expanding beyond the current headcount of about 400.

"This is an area of investment," Borgklint said. "We plan to grow the business."

Updated at 9:35 a.m. PT with the deal price, a no comment from Microsoft, and comments from an Ericsson executive.
