The connected workforce of tomorrow, today | Brennan IT

The ease of integrating video-enabled mobile devices with advanced collaboration technology will make this the year that workers really break free from their desks

As the ?bring your own device? (BYOD) trend gathers momentum?and more mobile devices enter the workplace, 2013 will see?a surge in mobile video collaboration, says Tim Gentry, Avaya managing director for Australia and New Zealand.

?Just as consumers are embracing these devices, we?re also seeing businesses using smartphones and tablets more aggressively to do business in a more cost-effective way,? Gentry says.

?Meanwhile we?ve got an estimated 36,000 video-enabled boardrooms in Australia. As network speeds improve, we?re going to see more businesses tying mobile video conferencing into the boardroom. The way chief executives communicate with their team will change with increased opportunities to look people in the eye in real-time, regardless of where they are.?

While the technologies behind the video conferencing trend are not new, and are indeed familiar to many consumers, Gentry says their implementation in a business context is quite different in terms of the widespread benefits to the organisation and the overall quality of experience.

?This goes well beyond Skyping or FaceTiming for a specific meeting ? for the most part, those are linear communication activities.

?This is about making collaboration incredibly vital and plugged into every aspect of a business, so the communication continues long after the conference is over and can be carried across a myriad of platforms.?

Incorporating Avaya?s collaboration tools into third-party software will be a key focus this year, letting users work as efficiently as possible without the need to switch back and forth between different applications. These tools will become more important than ever as staff spend less time tied to their desks and more of their time on the road.

As the National Broadband Network and high-speed LTE spread across Australia, they will enable businesses to further expand beyond the office walls.

The ongoing push towards unified communications and a single contact point for mobile staff will gain momentum this year as the mega-trends of mobility and collaboration continue to intertwine, Gentry says.

?The idea of having a single phone number, with the backend intelligence to know when and where to call you, is a simple thing that?s been out there for years. In 2013, the explosion in mobility combined with the need for improved collaboration is going to make the basics of unified communications relevant to a much broader spread of sectors and businesses,? he says.

?Federated collaboration between businesses will also become relevant to more businesses this year, driven by efficiency efforts
to extend collaboration beyond the organisation. Once again, it?s not that these are new technologies, just that the boom in mobility, BYOD and collaboration efforts will help them gain wider adoption.?

As well as collaborating with suppliers and partners, businesses will also continue to embrace social media in 2013 as it becomes a key tool for interacting with customers and the public. The need to cater to tech-savvy users is also driving initiatives such as the AvayaLive Engage virtual conference and collaboration environment.

?AvayaLive Engage is an avatar-based virtual environment, but it also incorporates all the traditional collaboration tools such as chat, video, desktop sharing, collaborative editing and group presentations ? so you?ve got the best of both worlds,? Gentry says.

?As virtual environments start to deliver solid benefits, you can expect them to become more commonplace for meetings, conferences and training sessions.?
