Hordes of shoppers are descending on stores to snap up the best deals of the year.

Black Friday, the day when retailers traditionally turn a profit for the year, actually got a jump start this year as many stores opened just as families were finishing up Thanksgiving dinner.

Stores are experimenting with ways to compete with online rivals like Amazon.com that can offer holiday shopping deals at any time and on any day. And this year, crowds gathered across the country as stores such as Target and Toys R Us opened on Thanksgiving evening, while retailers from Macy's to Best Buy opened their doors at midnight on Black Friday.

"I only shop for sales," says Joan Riedewald, one of thousands of shoppers on line at Macy's flagship store in New York City's Herald Square.

Retailers are hoping that the earlier openings will help boost sales this holiday season. It is unclear how many shoppers took advantage of the earlier openings. But about 17 percent of shoppers said earlier this month that they planned to shop at stores that opened on Thanksgiving, according to an International Council of Shopping Centers-Goldman Sachs survey. Overall, it's estimated that sales on Black Friday will be up 3.8 percent to $11.4 billion this year.

UBS nears settlement with Swiss, UK on Adoboli case

ZURICH/LONDON (Reuters) - UBS is nearing a settlement in the coming days with regulators in Switzerland and Britain for control failures that led to a $2.3 billion rogue trading loss, a person familiar with the matter said on Thursday.

The Swiss bank has finished its discussions with Finma, the Swiss regulator, and is finalizing a settlement with Britain's Financial Services Authority (FSA), the source said. The two regulators then plan to make a joint announcement.

The FSA could fine UBS between 20 million and 50 million pounds, the Financial Times said earlier on Thursday, adding that a deal could come next week.

The two regulators are jointly investigating the bank's control failings that led to Kweku Adoboli, a trader on UBS's "Delta One" desk, losing $2.3 billion for the bank.

That investigation is continuing after being put on hold during Adoboli's criminal trial. He was convicted of fraud and jailed for seven years on Tuesday.

UBS is keen to put the rogue trading scandal behind it, which could speed up any settlement with regulators.

Finma does not have the power to impose fines. It is expected to impose new supervisory conditions on UBS.

UBS, the FSA and Finma all declined to comment.

Any fine on UBS could be the second-biggest ever levied by the FSA, after its 59.5 million pound penalty on Britain's Barclays Plc in June as part of a UK-U.S. settlement for the manipulation of Libor interest rates.

UBS is also one of about a dozen banks being investigated for manipulating Libor, which could lead to further hefty fines being meted out. It is also in the middle of a big overhaul of its investment bank arm as it tries to cut costs and boost profits.

9.2-million-year-old rhino skull preserved by instant 'cooking to death' in volcanic ash

ScienceDaily (Nov. 21, 2012) ? Less than 2% of Earth's fossils are preserved in volcanic rock, but researchers have identified a new one: the skull of a rhino that perished in a volcanic eruption 9.2 million years ago.

The find is described in a paper published Nov. 21 in the open access journal PLOS ONE by Pierre-Olivier Antoine and colleagues from the University of Montpellier, France.

The fossil, found in Turkey, is thought to be that of a large two-horned rhino common in the Eastern Mediterranean region during that period. According to the researchers, unusual features of the preserved skull suggest that the animal was 'cooked to death' at temperatures that may have approached 500? C, in a volcanic flow similar to that of the eruption of Mt. Vesuvius in Italy in 79 A.D.

The rhino's grisly death was near-instantaneous, and followed by severe dehydration in the extreme heat of the eruption. As the researchers describe its end, "the body was baked under a temperature approximating 400?C, then dismembered within the pyroclastic flow, and the skull separated from body." The flow of volcanic ash then moved the skull about 30 km north of the eruption site, where it was discovered by the four member research team.

Although other researchers have previously identified fossils of soft-bodied organisms preserved in volcanic ash, organic matter near an active volcanic eruption is usually quickly destroyed by the high temperatures, making a fossil such as this one extremely rare.
