Dolphins do their talking on field, rout Jets 30-9

EAST RUTHERFORD, N.J. (AP) ? Joe Philbin reminded his Miami Dolphins to forget all the trash talk and shut the New York Jets up on the field.

Boy, did they listen to their coach.

Matt Moore threw a touchdown pass after stepping in for the injured Ryan Tannehill and the Dolphins didn't miss a beat, rolling past the New York Jets 30-9 Sunday for their third straight victory.

"We all had a job to do," Philbin said. "We didn't want to turn it into a personal affair. It was a big game and it came at a good time, coming off the bye, a divisional game on the road."

And it kept the surging Dolphins a half-game behind the AFC East-leading New England Patriots. Meanwhile, the Jets dropped to last in the division and headed into their bye-week break with lots of uncertainty.

"To say I never saw this coming is an understatement," coach Rex Ryan said. "This one, no question, is a tough one to accept."

The Jets couldn't get going even with Miami needing to turn to its backup quarterback after Tannehill injured his left knee and quadriceps muscle on a sack by Calvin Pace on the Dolphins' second possession.

Philbin had no immediate word on the severity of the injury, saying Tannehill would be evaluated after the Dolphins arrived home. Moore filled in nicely, finishing 11 of 19 for 131 yards after Tannehill was 2 of 5 for 18 yards.

"It always helps having your backup come in and perform like that," Reggie Bush said, "not missing a beat."

Ryan insisted his team was prepared after having a good week of practice, not distracted by all the back-and-forth chatter. Well, Bush and the Dolphins (4-3) were certainly over it all, but the Jets (3-5) were still going at it after the game.

"It was very satisfying for us, as good as it gets," Bush said. "We wanted to have the opportunity to jump on them early and we accomplished that. Once we got them down early, I thought that was it."

Olivier Vernon recovered a blocked punt in the end zone for a touchdown and blocked a field goal, and the Dolphins smothered Mark Sanchez and the Jets' offense. They were helped by some hideous play by New York, which has lost two straight.

Stung by the loss, a few Jets players were still zinging the Dolphins after the game.

"They're not a very clean team," wide receiver Chaz Schilens said. "They're a little cheap."

Cornerback Antonio Cromartie also called Bush "a punk" who showed "his true colors."

As far as the Dolphins are concerned, they'll take all the shots from their AFC East rivals. After all, they got the win and sent the Jets into a bye-week break searching for answers.

"It feels good to do no more talking and feels even better to back it up," Moore said. "Our special teams put us in great situation to win this, but we were ready as soon as we stepped off the bus."

It showed, as Miami raced to a 20-0 lead by midway through the second quarter, and New York couldn't recover.

Ryan said the Jets would "empty our tanks" as they tried to sweep the Dolphins for the first time in his four seasons as coach. But Sanchez made mistakes throughout, not hitting open receivers at times and not taking care of the football.

He was 28 of 54 for 283 yards with a touchdown and interception, and was done in late in the opening quarter by a fumble on a sack by Nolan Carroll that the Dolphins turned into a touchdown. He also had the Jets driving while trailing 27-3 in the third quarter, but Chris Clemons intercepted a throw intended for Dustin Keller.

That brought out loud boos and some chants for Tim Tebow by the angry crowd at MetLife Stadium, which had a few thousand empty seats, more than likely because of the threats of the approaching Hurricane Sandy.

"Obviously, I'm a big Tebow fan, but I'm not a big fan of screaming to get the backup quarterback in," Keller said. "I feel like fans should have their starting quarterback's back 100 percent until they officially make some type of change."

And that's not coming yet. Ryan said he had no thoughts of switching to Tebow, who had one carry for 2 yards in limited action again.

"I believe in Mark," Ryan said. "I think Mark has proven that he can win in this league. I think he gives us our best chance to win. That's my opinion and that's the one that matters."

After Dan Carpenter kicked a 33-yard field goal less than 4 minutes in, Miami then recovered an onside kick. Although the Dolphins didn't turn it into points, the special teams unit came up big again later in the quarter. Jimmy Wilson blocked Robert Malone's punt and Vernon recovered to make it 10-0.

Sanchez turned it over on the Jets' next possession when he was sacked by Carroll and Paul Soliai recovered the fumble at New York's 32. Moore led a six-play drive capped by Daniel Thomas' 3-yard run to make it 17-0.

Even the one area that had been flawless failed the Jets. Nick Folk's 35-yard field-goal attempt was blocked by Vernon; Folk had opened the season 11 for 11.

New York finally got on the scoreboard a few minutes into the second half on Folk's 38-yarder, but the Jets couldn't keep the momentum. Moore connected with Anthony Fasano for a 4-yard touchdown to make it 27-3.

Schilens had a 5-yard touchdown catch with 7:20 left, but the 2-point conversion failed and the Jets had made too many mistakes and fallen too far behind to mount much of a comeback.

"It's time for a bye," Schilens said. "It's time for us to regroup, figure out what we're doing wrong and figure out a way to do it better."

NOTES: Cromartie missed a few plays after dislocating a pinkie early in the first quarter after falling and then getting into it with Bush on the sideline. ... Jets LB Bart Scott had his streak of 119 consecutive games played end because of a toe injury that has bothered him since the last time the teams played in Week 3. ... Former DE Dennis Byrd, briefly paralyzed 20 years ago in a game against Kansas City, became the fifth former Jets player to have his number retired, joining Joe Namath, Don Maynard, Joe Klecko and Curtis Martin.

In emails to UK police, Anonymous seeks solidarity

(AP) ? The online movement known as Anonymous has made an unusual appeal to British police: "Stand with us."

Authorities said Thursday that the cyber rebels apparently broke into a forum called UKPoliceOnline to steal officers' email addresses, which they used to distribute a manifesto to current and former members of British law enforcement.

"We know that most of you are working-class people, like the majority of us, and that you too have mortgages, student loans, or your children do, and other debts as well. Don't defend the traitors against us, your fellow citizens," the message read in part. "We offer you our hands in friendship. Join us."

Anonymous is an amorphous, Internet-based insurgency responsible for a slew of cyberattacks against law enforcement websites, so the tone of its latest missive was something of a departure from previous practice.

Geoff Hyams, the managing director of The NSI Group, which runs UKPoliceOnline, described the messages as sober and thoughtful. "It was almost like a recruitment-type email," he said.

It's unclear how successful the recruitment drive will be.

London's Metropolitan Police said in a statement that it was investigating how Anonymous obtained the officers' email addresses.

boosting corporate culture & employee engagement: 5 wellness tips ...

corporate culture

Isn?t it wonderful that companies are starting to take note of the importance of wellness? Those who have invested in creating wellness programs with focus and energy are discovering the benefits to employee engagement, organizational culture and healthcare costs. Most companies know wellness isn?t just about giving employees a break to take a walk or a refillable water bottle. When O.C. Tanner leaders talk about wellness, they mean the whole person, and provide opportunities to improve wellness in three key areas: mind, body, and personal finance.

Our leap into a more focused approach to promoting personal wellness is not unique. A study from the American Institute for Preventative Medicine reports 91 percent of organizations now have some type of health promotion program compared to 78 percent ten years ago.

My Wellness at O.C. Tanner has not only allowed our people to shrink waistlines and grow savings, I?ve seen it work as a tool for team-building, engagement, and of course, recognition. Here are a few things we learned that may help your program be a success:

  1. It?s important to give your program a voice. We have used social networking tools?including Facebook, our intranet, and our employee recognition tools?to give program participants the opportunity to celebrate accomplishments, share setbacks, communicate upcoming events, and provide peer-to-peer support.
  2. Team support makes all the difference. We?ve discovered that by working in teams, participation and completion percentages increase. No matter the event or goal, it is usually more fun to tackle new challenges with a support system. Our participation and completion data supports this assumption.
  3. Collaborate, collaborate, collaborate. Ideas for our wellness program come from all over the company. Executive leadership, human resources, client services, and marketing professionals have all helped contribute to the program?s success. We know we need to reach employees all over the company, so we work with employees from different departments to make that happen.
  4. Partner up. Knowledge is power, so we partner with community and business organizations that provide us with qualified and informed subject matter experts. They share their knowledge and skills on budget planning, healthy eating, and more. It?s been a terrific benefit that?s usually available to us at low or no cost. And, the added?convenience of having classes and seminars right here at work (rather than having to drive to different locations) makes personal wellness in all areas of life seem more doable.
  5. Make sure everyone has skin in the game. O.C. Tanner?s leaders took a leap of faith in supporting the program. While it paid off, we have also challenged our employees to take that leap with us. When we hold a financial planning course or offer on-site massage therapy, we ask participants to contribute to their own small investment to the education or service. We?ve learned that when a registration fee is required, our completion rate in courses and programs go up. The idea that employees, as the participants, have a stake in things, has proven to be a motivating factor in whether or not they complete a course or reach a goal.

We?ve also discovered how wellness programs can bring people together.?Our wellness participants bond with people they don?t typically work with, so they?re able to build new friendships. I?ve seen my co-workers re-engage not only to improve their well-being, but their performance on the job because they find new inspiration, new motivation, and new energy. Employees have found new ways to go the extra mile for clients and co-workers because O.C. Tanner has gone the extra mile for them.

Does your company have a corporate wellness program? If so, what has it done for you, your friends at work, and your organization? What?s your favorite part?

Prasugrel may reduce cardiovascular events among patients managed medically after an angiogram for acute coronary syndrome

ScienceDaily (Oct. 24, 2012) ? A study has found that the anti-clotting medication prasugrel reduced cardiovascular events among patients who present with an acute coronary syndrome and are managed medically after an angiogram is performed to determine coronary anatomy. Results of the TRILOGY ACS trial, Angiographic Cohort were presented October 24 at the 24th annual Transcatheter Cardiovascular Therapeutics (TCT) scientific symposium.

Dual antiplatelet therapy (DAPT) with aspirin and a P2Y12 platelet inhibitor is beneficial in patients with unstable angina (UA) or non-ST segment elevation myocardial infarction (NSTEMI). Because a substantial fraction of these patients do not undergo revascularization after angiography, their optimal DAPT strategy is unknown.

The TRILOGY ACS trial compared prasugrel with aspirin versus clopidogrel with aspirin in the primary cohort of 7,243 UA/NSTEMI patients less than 75 years old who were medically managed without revascularization and had at least one high-risk criterion. The primary results of this study, presented at the European Society of Cardiology earlier this year, did not show any benefit for prasugrel with aspirin versus clopidogrel.

Patients were enrolled in 52 countries from June 2008 through September 2011 with median follow-up of 17 months. Those who weighed more than 60 kg were treated with a 10 mg maintenance dose of prasugrel versus 75 mg of clopidogrel; patients less than 60 kg received 5 mg of prasugrel.

Angiography was not required for enrollment, but if performed, evidence of coronary disease had to be demonstrated (at least one lesion > 30 percent stenosis or prior percutaneous coronary intervention/ coronary artery bypass graft surgery). Approximately 43% of the patients had angiography performed and coronary anatomy determined before being triaged to medical therapy. ?

Overall, in the TRILOGY ACS Trial, prasugrel did not reduce cardiovascular events among patients managed medically for ACS.

However, when treated with prasugrel compared to clopidogrel, patients who were triaged to medical therapy in the trial following angiography tended to have:

  • Lower rates of the combined endpoint of cardiovascular disease/heart attack/stroke
  • Lower rates of heart attack, stroke alone, and recurrent ischemic events
  • Higher rates of bleeding

"Though hypothesis-generating, these results are consistent with previous trials and suggest that when angiography is performed and coronary disease is confirmed, the benefits and risks of intensive antiplatelet therapy exist whether medical therapy or percutaneous coronary intervention is elected," said Stephen D. Wiviott, MD. Dr. Wiviott is a senior investigator with the TIMI Study Group, associate physician, Cardiovascular Division at Brigham and Women's Hospital, and associate professor of Medicine at Harvard Medical School.

The results of the TRILOGY ACS Angiographic Cohort trial will be presented on October 24 in Miami, Florida.

XCOM: Enemy Unknown

2K Games and Firaxis have succeeded in rekindling a long-dead franchise with XCOM: Enemy Unknown. This turn-based strategy?game?is a reimagining of 1994's X-COM: UFO Defense, a long-beloved game that last saw a sequel in 2001 with the ill-received X-COM: Enforcer, a shooter that didn't have any of the first game's strategy. XCOM: Enemy Unknown feels like a straight remake of the original, bringing almost everything gamers loved about it to the PC, Xbox 360?, and PlayStation 3?, with updated graphics, streamlined gameplay, and plenty of challenge. I reviewed the PC version.

Aliens Attack
The premise of XCOM: Enemy Unknown is simple. Aliens are invading. They're starting with abductions, but as the game progresses it becomes all-out war against Earth. That's where you come in. You command XCOM, a global team that has to fight the aliens. You alternate between the strategic organization level and the tactical combat level, winning battles and building your forces to be ready for new threats.

Half of the game takes place in XCOM headquarters, where you have to manage a large underground installation with multiple types of facilities and uses. Scientists research alien equipment you bring back and let you equip your squads with newer and better weapons and armor. Engineers build the new equipment and excavate and construct new facilities in your headquarters. Soldiers can be given different types of equipment and assigned different skills based on their randomly-assigned class (Assault, Heavy, Support, and Sniper) and their rank, which acts as a level system that rewards soldiers you keep alive and in missions. The Situation Room lets you monitor levels of panic around the world and deploy satellites to improve your cash flow and ability to track threats. These are are important because new equipment and facilities cost money and if too many countries and areas panic and leave the XCOM alliance, the shadowy council will pull the plug on it. Finally, Mission Control lets you scan the planet for threats, respond to requests for aid, and scramble interceptors to shoot down UFOs. Time slowly ticks by in the headquarters unless you speed it up by scanning the world, and those hours and days that pass mean you can research new equipment and build new facilities. The more time that passes, the more time the aliens have to send bigger threats your way, so you have to balance between focusing on shoring up your equipment and taking the fight to them.

Future Warfare
The other half of the game takes place on the ground in different combat missions. You control a squad of up to six soldiers who kill aliens, rescue civilians, defuse bombs, and perform other tasks in large, tile-based, multi-level maps. Each turn, your soldiers can perform up to two actions: move and shoot, move twice as far, move and use items, and perform special attacks like fire rocket launchers (for heavy soldiers) and deal extra damage with head shots (for snipers). As soldiers grow by killing aliens and surviving missions, they get new skills. However, if they die in combat, they're gone and you have to replace them with a less experienced soldier. Since each soldier can be given unique names and looks, it's easy to become attached to them as you walk them through multiple missions, and it makes it that much harder to see them get disintegrated by an alien laser pistol. You'll constantly? weigh the merits of aggressively moving forward to complete the mission and trying to keep all your squad alive. The soldier customization isn't quite as robust as in the original XCOM, but it has enough options to give you control over your squad and make you feel attached to your soldiers.

Cover and maneuvering are every bit as important as skills and equipment in battle. Each map is covered in a fog of war, and you need to carefully move your squad forward while keeping them out of the open to find the aliens without getting everyone killed in a few moves. Cover like cars, walls, and wreckage afford your soldiers protection and can mean the difference between an alien winging a soldier and putting him in the infirmary for a week and outright blowing his head off. It's a simple, vital element that is easy enough to use (move your soldiers to objects on the battlefield that show shields or half-shields, depending on how much cover they give in different directions) and keeps the game from becoming a question of loading up heavy weapons and rushing the enemy.

Each playthrough randomizes events, and missions are randomly generated from a pool of maps and objectives (most involving killing all the aliens). It gives the game some variety, but the maps and missions tend to feel similar as you play a full game. Like Diablo III?, XCOM: Enemy Unknown would have benefitted from a more granular, tile-based system that procedurally generates maps instead of taking huge, familiar game chunks and bringing them together. It feels less random than the original X-Com, like Diablo III feels less random than Diablo II.

PC Gameplay
I played the PC version, which uses a mouse and keyboard to control the game. Since the action is tile-based, moving soldiers and making them fire is as easily as right-clicking on a location and left-clicking on an enemy. The gamepad controls of the Xbox 360 and PlayStation 3 versions are about as accessible, using the analog stick instead of a mouse but otherwise offering the same tactical control.

A multiplayer mode lets you face off against friends, but it's fairly limited. Multiplayer games are squad-based with point limits, giving each unit both human (based on equipment) and alien a point value. Players can have small squads of a few very powerful units or a full squad of weak or modest units, and there's no single right way to do it. It's a fun way to play the alien units, but there isn't much depth to it.

XCOM: Enemy Unknown is the return of a beloved and forgotten sci-fi franchise that will entertain tactics fans and satisfy classic gaming fans.?More randomized maps and more online options would have been great, but as it stands XCOM: Enemy Unknown is already an excellent strategy game, despite the features it lacks.

NFL Rumors: Could Dallas Cowboys Hire Mike Holmgren To Replace Jason Garrett As Cowboys Head Coach?

The Dallas Cowboys have been mired in mediocrity for too long. Once known as America?s Team, the Cowboys have reached the NFL Playoffs just four times since the turn of the century. They have not made it to the Super Bowl since the 1995 NFL season, and have won just one of their last seven postseason games. This cannot sit well with owner Jerry Jones.

Neither can the fact that the Cowboys are just 3-3 through the first six games of the 2012 NFL season and just 16-14 overall under current head coach, Jason Garrett.

Jones likes Garrett. He has known him for years. But this just isn?t working out for Dallas. I am not saying it is all Garrett?s fault. Not by a long shot.

Personally, I feel as if Tony Romo is one of the more overrated quarterbacks in the entire league. I would rather have several rookies or equally as many college quarterbacks who could be entering the 2013 NFL Draft. Romo has always had the talent, but his decision making skills leave a lot to be desired.

Simply put, I don?t feel as if the Cowboys will ever win with Romo as the team?s starting quarterback.

But it also doesn?t appear as if Dallas is all that close to competing for a championship under Garrett either. Jones may like him, but there is another man out there who Jones has long been enamored with and who may be interested in making a return to the coaching sidelines.

As soon as the Cleveland Browns were sold, many felt as if the end was near for team president Mike Holmgren. That still appears to be the likely scenario, and now Holmgren has said that he may want to resume his former role of head coach, even at the age of 64.

Holmgren said that he misses the ?coaching part? of the NFL, and that he almost names himself head coach when the Browns fired Eric Mangini. He didn?t think it was the right time.

But those feelings may have changed.

If Jones does fire Garrett at the end of the 2012 NFL season, especially if the Cowboys do not reach the playoffs, I would at least expect him to place a phone call to Holmgren. While Jones would conceivably consider other former big name coaches with a great winning tradition, including Bill Cowher and Jon Gruden, Holmgren would also be a candidate due to the mutual respect he and Jones have shared for over two decades.

Either way, Garrett appears to be in trouble.

  • 3GB for $34.99
  • 6GB for $49.99
  • 12GB for $79.99

'Jesus,' 'ninja,' among worst passwords of 2012

3 hrs.

The next time you're asked to create?an 8-character password, don't choose "password." Despite it being the among worst possible choices, it remains the most common password?used on the Internet and posted by hackers.

No. 2 and No. 3, respectively are the tried-and-true weaklings?"123456" and "12345678." (Those two mean you can count???on being low-hanging fruit for hackers, that is.)

The info?comes from?SplashData, which makes password management applications. The company's?top 25 list of the "scariest" passwords was released with?Halloween as a peg, but there's no treats here for anyone, and possibly some nasty tricks.

The list was put together "from?files containing millions of stolen passwords posted online by hackers," SplashData says. If you use any of the passwords on the list, you should change them immediately. Otherwise, users "of any of these passwords are most likely to be victims in future breaches," the company says.

While "password," "123456" and "12345678" remain the top three again from last year's list, newcomers include?"welcome, " "jesus," "ninja," "mustang" and the brilliant?"password1."?

Here's the top 25 "Worst Passwords of 2012," including their current ranking and any change from the 2011 list:?

1. ?password (Unchanged)
2, ?123456 (Unchanged)
3. ?12345678 (Unchanged)

"At this time of year, people enjoy focusing on scary costumes, movies and decorations, but those who have been through it can tell you how terrifying it is to have your identity stolen because of a hacked password,? said Morgan Slain, SplashData CEO, in a statement.?

?Even though each year hacking tools get more sophisticated, thieves still tend to prefer easy targets,? he said. ?Just a little bit more effort in choosing better passwords will go a long way toward making you safer online.?

Cell Phones Breeding Ground for Bacteria ? News 20 at 5

By Alicia Jarman, News 20 at Five

A recent study shows that cell phones can be hazardous to your health. Doctors are saying there is a super bacteria living on cell phones. Scientists discovered that 10 out of 11 phones have the bacteria.

?Everyday, use hand sanitizer to clean your phone,? said T-Mobile employee Gavin Molden.

The germs on the surface of cell phones can be easily removed by anti-bacterial wipes or cotton balls with alcohol on them.

Chinese Fiction Is Hot

On the evening the Nobel Prize committee crowned magical-realist novelist Mo Yan as the first laureate living in China (outside a prison), Alice Xin Liu, managing editor of Pathlight, a new magazine of Chinese literature translated into English, was downing homemade ale at Vine Leaf, a Beijing bar. Her smartphone lit up with ecstatic text messages. ?But I wasn?t really surprised,? she said. ?Mo Yan?s name had been floated for a while, and in the past year the international buzz around Chinese literature has grown really loud. It felt like it was time.? Liu, who is 26, spent her early childhood in Beijing before moving to the U.K. at age 7 and then back to China after college?just in time to witness the blossoming of interest in Chinese authors.

This April, the celebrated London Book Fair featured 21 invited Chinese authors (including Mo Yan) as part of its ?2012 China Market Focus.? To be sure, as Liu relates, there was ?a bit of a culture clash,? with the Chinese officials accompanying the literary delegation usurping more podium time than the actual writers. (?Predictably the British media had a laugh about that,? says Liu.) Yet the book fair?s decision to showcase writers from China is indicative, she says, of growing interest from international publishers and audiences.

?In the past, people tended to see China as speaking with one voice, having one experience,? says Jo Lusby, managing director of Penguin Books China. ?But what [global] readers are beginning to glimpse now is the great diversity of voices and opinions within China. It?s true that when addressing foreigners, there can be a tendency to speak on behalf of the Chinese nation. But in their own writing for a domestic audience, Chinese writers show a great range of perspectives and often a willingness to tackle difficult topics, like forced abortions and trafficking of women, especially in novels. There?s more freedom in fiction: On one level, it?s not true. On another level, it?s all very true.?

Lusby opened the Beijing office of Penguin, the U.K.-based publishing house, in 2005 and has since been at the forefront of identifying novelists whose works might resonate outside China, as well as within. In 2008, Penguin China released an English-language version of Wolf Totem, a bestselling Chinese novel about a Beijing intellectual?s yearning for spiritual redemption in the wilds of Inner Mongolia.

Currently, Penguin China releases about four Chinese novels in English per year. ?It used to be assumed that [Western readers] were interested in books about China, but not necessarily from China. Now that?s changing,? Lusby says. She declined to release sales figures on individual titles, but said: ?Seven or eight years ago, there wouldn?t have been the market to sustain what we?re doing. Today it?s a challenging business, but it?s commercially as well as literarily worthwhile for us.? In particular, she seeks out ?the kinds of books and perspectives that only a Chinese person could write.?

Take, for instance, the novel of political intrigue The Civil Servant?s Notebook, published in English on Oct. 10. The author Wang Xiaofang once worked for the vice-mayor of Shenyang?before his boss was sentenced for accepting $1.55 million in bribes and executed in 2006. ?I left politics to begin a writing career because I could no longer continue to be a spiritual eunuch,? Wang says. ?How religion saves believers is how literature saves me.? Based in part on his own experiences, the novel recounts the corrupt scheming of political rivals vying to replace their retiring boss. ?My work reveals the psychic condition of politicians who have no faith in ideals.?

The novel belongs to the distinctively Chinese genre known as ?officialdom fiction,? which the book?s translator, Eric Abrahamsen, defines as ?fiction that?s designed to reveal inner workings of Chinese society, particularly corruption in government. It gives average people a better handle on how decisions are actually made.?

Abrahamsen, a young American in Beijing, is a founder of Paper Republic, a collective of literary translators that is also co-publisher, with the state-run People?s Literature magazine, of the translation magazine Pathlight. Skillful translation?which gracefully conveys literal meaning, the author?s voice, and interprets cultural context?is a demanding if underappreciated art. Most literary translators do it for love and receive only minimal outside recognition.

Other subgenres specific to China are popular, Abrahamsen explains. There?s wuxia ??historically based martial-arts fantasy, where everyone belongs to secret societies and practices special moves learned from their bearded master on his deathbed. ? In the West, we?ve got our Arthurian legends and Tolkien-style fantasies. In China, there?s wuxia.? Then there?s tomb-robbing adventure stories??people finding treasure and secrets in old dynastic tombs; it?s Indiana Jones-type stuff, but historically and culturally rooted in China.? Then more seriously, there are stories of new migrants from the Chinese countryside adapting to urban life.

Sheng Keyi, a writer born in the 1970s, left her northern hometown and moved to the southern boomtown of Shenzhen in search of work?part of the first wave of young, working migrant women. That experience informed her novel Northern Girls, which was published in English translation by Penguin this spring. While shifting between temporary jobs, her protagonists fall in and out of relationships in a city fast becoming known as a cauldron of sex and instability.

?In China, the upper classes and middle classes don?t know such a way of life exists [as in the factories],? she says. ?Yes, it?s a big country. In its different corners, people silently experience their own angers, sorrows, fleeting happiness, and great pressures. ? How can people know unless it is put in writing??

2013 NFL Draft Scouting Report: Marcus Davis, WR, Virginia Tech

Marcus Davis

(Photo: US Presswire)

QB?/?RB?/?WR?/?TE?/?OT?/?OG?/?OC?/?DT?/?DE?/?OLB?/?ILB?/?CB?/?SAF

Prospect:?Marcus Davis, WR, Virginia Tech
Height:?6?4?
Weight:?232
Grade:?6.8 (Grading Scale)

Athleticism
+Very balanced, fluid runner.
+Changes direction well, elusive in the open field.
+Shows some power breaking tackles.
+Can get downfield and outrun defenders, but does not have elite speed that can run by safeties with ease.
- Not overly explosive in and out of cuts.

Catching
+Shows the ability to go up and ?pluck? the ball out of the air.
+Catches with his hands, not his body
+Good body control in the air while laying out for the catch.
+ Most of the drops he does have are from wildly?overthrown?balls.
+Concentrates on the ball in traffic.
+Strong hands
Route-Running
+Displays excellent balance when planting and changing direction.
+Able to sell double moves.
+Moves seamlessly in and out of his cuts.
- Does not see a lot of press coverage.
- Bit of a ?build-up? runner that needs space to reach his top speed.
- Sometimes takes false steps that slow him down in the middle of routes.

Blocking
+Willing down-the-field blocker.
+Huge frame allows him to swallow up smaller corners.

Intelligence
-Plays in a simpler offense that does not use the?entirety?of an NFL route tree.
+ Can make adjustments on the fly.

Leadership
+Clean prospect off the field.
- Only a one-year starter.

Overview:

Davis has spent most of his college career sitting behind Danny Coale and Jarrett Boykin, but he has emerged as Virginia Tech?s most dynamic receiving target in 2012.

His best trait is his athleticism and ability to pluck the ball out of the air, which has resulted in a lot of big, game-changing plays this year. ?With Logan Thomas showing a lot of issues with his accuracy, Davis? size and catching radius has helped subside Thomas? flaws.

Davis? is built to be a big-play outside receiver; he is not built like a shifty, small slot receiver, although he can move laterally. At 6?4, 232, he has enough size and raw ability to be a potential starter in the NFL. To me, he is one of the most underrated receiving prospects in the country whose production is hampered by a stale offense and?inconsistent?quarterback play. ?How he?develops?depends on how quickly he can pick up an NFL offense has how he can adjust to press coverage at the next level.

vs. Austin Peay
- Tall, imposing, fluid athelete
? natural open-field running ability.
? Shows great balance and body control and balance when going for passes.
? A few drops, but many passes were high or contested balls.
? Very good after the catch making defenders miss.

Immigration Clearinghouse - Colorado conducts more citizenship ...

DENVER (AP) ? There are 300 more suspected noncitizens on Colorado?s voter rolls, Secretary of State Gessler announced Tuesday in the latest chapter of a contentious national debate over what Republicans say is vulnerability in the voting system.

The latest figures are from the 3,903 people who received letters from Gessler?s office questioning their citizenship in August. During a first round of checks, Gessler said 141 others were found to be possible noncitizens based on a federal immigration database.

Critics of Gessler, who is a Republican, have questioned his political motives and argue the checks have the potential to disenfranchise eligible voters. Some of the people who have received letters questioning their citizenship have turned out to be U.S. citizens, and a few of the original 141 have maintained they are citizens.

The majority of the people who are suspected to be noncitizens and on the rolls are unaffiliated voters, which make up more than half, and Democrats, according to data provided by Gessler?s office. The proportion in party registration breakdown is similar to the overall number of people who received letters in August.

State election officials did additional checks this month after obtaining immigration identification numbers from the state division of motor vehicles for all of people who received letters. They received letters because at one point they showed proof they weren?t U.S. citizens, such as a green card, when obtaining a driver?s license.

The latest figures mean that out of the 3,903 who received letters, 441 are believed to be non-citizens, according to the federal database, which has normally been used to check the status of legal immigrants who receive government benefits.

?It?s unacceptable to have ineligible voters casting ballots in our elections,? Gessler said. ?We want to ensure the most accurate reliable elections possible.?

Gessler?s office said it has mailed letters to people believed to be ineligible voters, alerting them about the database findings so they can verify their citizenship or voluntarily remove their registrations.

Of the 441 identified as suspected noncitizens, 232 are unaffiliated, 163 are Democrats, and 37 are Republican. Gessler?s office has said they did not look at party registration when checking the voter rolls for possible fraud.

Swing states, like Colorado and Florida, have gotten permission from the federal government to use the immigration database to check voter rolls. Others battleground states, like Iowa and Ohio, have also asked for permission to use the database.

Gessler and other Republican election chiefs in those states have come under heavy criticism from Democrats and voter advocacy groups, who question their political motives in a presidential election that polls show will be extremely close.

?It?s suspiciously close to the election for someone who has been so partisan for this kind behavior,? said Ellen Dumm, a consultant working for voting rights in Colorado.

Dumm said everyone agrees ineligible voters shouldn?t cast ballots. But she argued that Gessler should focus on more important issues, like making sure the secretary of state?s office website functions properly to allow people to register to vote, and coordinating with clerks on election issues before November. She said the 441 figure amounts to a ?rounding error? in the greater scheme, considering there are 3.5 million registered voters in Colorado.

Gessler has forwarded the names of the suspected noncitizens, 441 in all, to county clerks for any potential challenge at the polls if they show up to cast ballots.

?Though the timing is not ideal, I felt it was important to alert these voters that the federal government says they?re not citizens,? Gessler said in a written statement. He also sent a letter to U.S. Attorney John Walsh in Denver on Tuesday, letting him know of the figures, telling him that many of the voters believed to be noncitizens would appear on voter rolls across the state.

Walsh announced this month that was appointing a prosecutor to look into any voter fraud in the upcoming election. Gessler said in the letter to Walsh that his office only recently completed the citizenship checks because his office didn?t get access to the federal immigration database until August.

Nano-machines built to mimic human muscle could help power cyborgs, keep the OSI budget down

Image

At today's prices, building a Six Million Dollar Man would cost around $31 million. Of course, being a TV show means the Office of Scientific Intelligence doesn't have too many bionic employees, but that might not the case in the future. Nicolas Giuseppone and a team at the Université de Strasbourg and CNRS have created thousands of nano-machines to replicate the movement of human muscle fibers. Weaving them all together, the machines are able to make a coordinated contraction movement that stretches and contracts. For the moment, the supramolecular polymers can only stretch a matter of micrometers, but in the future they could be used to create artificial muscles, small robots or even materials that can move. Hopefully it'll also give us the power to leap tall buildings, so we'll be outside practicing our sound effects.

Falling pump prices could give Obama a lift

Gerald Herbert / AP

Gas prices are displayed at a gas station and mini-mart in the Mid City section of New Orleans. Pump prices have fallen quickly in the past several days, giving Mitt Romney one less thing to slam President Barack Obama with in the run-up to the election.

By John W. Schoen, NBC News

In a week that saw President Barack Obama poll dead-even with Republican rival Mitt Romney in the race for the White House, it may have been some relief to?Democrats?that gas prices have shed 17 cents in the last 12 days.

While?that?could help boost the president's chances for another four-year term (or at least not hurt them), the?drop in prices?has more to do with luck than with White House energy policy.

After refinery bottlenecks sent prices surging ahead of a seasonal switch from summer to winter gasoline blends, those kinks have been cleared and gasoline has begun flowing smoothly again.

The global oil markets, meanwhile, are awash in oil thanks to a global economic slowdown that has cut into demand. And while tighter sanctions on Iran have crimped that country?s oil exports, any shortfall has been more than made up by rising U.S. production set in motion by forces in place before?Obama took office.

For all the spirited debate about the success or failure of the White House's energy policies, presidents have little control over the market forces that drive gas prices higher or lower.

?(Obama) gets blamed for high gasoline high prices -- which he has nothing to do with -- and he takes credit for higher production -- which he has nothing to do with,? said John Kingston, director of news at Platt?s. ?So maybe it all sort of balances out.?

The timing of the pump price plunge comes as the candidates continue to pound each other?over energy policy. After surging to more than $4 a gallon in many parts of the country, the national average price of a gallon of regular has fallen by 13 cents to $3.58 in the past week,?according to Energy Department data.

The sharp slide is expected continue, according to AAA, pulling average pump prices down to between $3.40 and $3.50 by Election Day and $3.25 to $3.40 by Thanksgiving.

The prospect for that continued decline rests, in part, on continued stability in the price of crude oil, which has remained remarkably steady despite ongoing tensions with Iran over its nuclear program.

As the U.S. and its allies have tightened the noose on Tehran this year, the loss of oil revenues has plunged the Iranian economy into chaos. Crude oil sales generate about half of Iranian government revenues.?Oil and oil products make up nearly 80 percent of its total exports, according to U.S. estimates. Oil analysts calculate that the sanctions have blocked sales of roughly 1 million barrels a day, or about a quarter of Iran?s production capacity.

The lost oil income has lopped roughly a third off the value of the Iranian currency, the rial, relative to the dollar, sparking a round of painful inflation for Iranian consumers and putting added pressure on the Iranian regime to end its nuclear weapons development program.

Iranian: Our money is becoming more worthless every day

On Tuesday, Iran said it would halt oil exports altogether if Western sanctions tighten any further.

"We have prepared a plan to run the country without any oil revenues," Iranian oil minister Rostam Qasemi told reporters in Dubai. "If you continue to add to the sanctions we (will) cut our oil exports to the world. ... We are hopeful that this doesn't happen, because citizens will suffer. We don't want to see European and U.S. citizens suffer."

Until recently, the threat of a full cutoff of Iranian oil production would have been enough to send crude prices soaring. But with global demand slowing because of sluggish economies, the oil markets have remained surprisingly stable.

That could change if Iran ups the ante and moves to restrict oil shipments from other oil producers in the region. One long-standing worry in the oil markets is the potential crimp in supplies from military action in the Strait of Hormuz, the global pinch point bordering Iran through which roughly 20 percent of the world?s oil flows every day.

An Iranian blockade remains a constant threat to global oil supplies. Last month, more than 30 nations, led by the U.S. Navy, conducted naval exercises that included efforts to thwart a simulated mining of critical shipping lanes.

The results were not reassuring, according to a report by PBS Newshour.

Of the 29 simulated mines that were dropped in the water, ?I don?t think a great many were found,? retired Navy Capt. Robert O?Donnell, a former mine warfare director for his service, told the NewsHour. ?It was probably around half or less.?

U.S. oil refiners are getting an even bigger break on crude prices. That's?thanks to a steady rise in North American production?captive to a pipeline system that was designed and built before recent production surges in Canada and revived U.S. oilfields. Much of the credit goes to advances in technology that have had little to do with U.S. energy policy. But the gains have been both unexpected and dramatic.

Since 2009, shortly after Obama took office, U.S. oil output has risen by roughly 1.6 million barrels per day, ending a more than tw-decade decline in production. The glut of oil has depressed domestic prices compared to the global benchmark, providing U.S. refiners with a discount of about $20 a barrel below the global price of about $110. That lower U.S. price will continue to help keep U.S. pump prices in check.

The domestic oil boom has also helped cut unemployment in energy-producing states, adding roughly?1.7 million new jobs this year, according to IHS Global Insight?s energy research group. That number could rise to almost 3 million by 2020, the firm said in a study released Tuesday.?

The connection between energy and foreign policy in the Middle East, with T. Boone Pickens, founder of BP Capital. We've tied our future to a cartel, he says, and part of the money we send them goes to the Taliban.

Madonna's staged gunplay angers Denver crowd

Mario Anzuoni / Reuters

By Rolling Stone

Madonna left the gun play-heavy segment of her "MDNA" concert intact on Thursday night at Denver's Pepsi Center, upsetting some fans who say the pop star should have removed the section in light of the July movie theater shooting in nearby Aurora, Colo.

The AP reports that fans called into local TV stations after the show to air their grievances over the segement, in which the pop star wields a prop gun and pretends to shoot an imaginary criminal while images of blood splattering are displayed on a backdrop. The scene takes place during Madonna's performance of "Gang Bang," a song off MDNA that contains the lyrics, "shot my lover in the head."

Madonna: Fake guns, violence on "MDNA" tour are symbols

"We all just stood there. Everybody who was around me all had shock on their face," attendee Aaron Fransua noted. "I heard a lot of 'wows.'" Mile High Sports Radio Denver personality Peter Burns noticed a similar reaction while in another section. "You could see people kinda looking at each other," he said. "I heard the word 'Colorado,' you know, 'Aurora,' 'shooting.' You could hear people talking about it and it was little bit unsettling. I saw two or three people get up and grab their stuff and actually leave their seats."

Madonna's publicist, Liz Rosenberg, countered that to omit the segment was impossible because of its importance to the show. "It's like taking out the third act of?'Hamlet,'" said Rosenberg. "Madonna does not make things pretty and tie them up with a bow."

Madonna says "Black Muslim"?Obama comment was "ironic"

Madonna has come under frequent fire for using the gun props on her "MDNA" tour, particularly during a summer stop in Edinburgh, Scotland soon after the Aurora shooting, where authorities claimed the singer was asked to keep the segment out of the show. Madonna released a letter soon after explaining that the weapons were "metaphors" and that she did not "condone violence or the use of guns."
