Tornado spotted north of Sacramento, weather service says

Map shows general area where a tornado was appears to have touhed down north of Sacramento.
A ?low-level tornado apparently was spotted Tuesday afternoon in an area north of Sacramento, the National Weather Service said.

The tornado was reported about 1:30 p.m. between Corning and Red Bluff about 100 miles north of Sacramento, according to meteorologists.

"We're pretty certain that it was a tornado," Dan Keeton, a meteorologist in the agency's Sacramento office, told The Times.

He said the Weather Service had dispatched a team to the area to assess possible damage, gather eyewitness accounts and collect other evidence. But preliminary reports "indicate a fairly low-end tornado," Keeton said.

The tornado was caused when the same storm system hitting the Los Angeles area passed through Northern California, leaving a mass of cold air in its wake. That triggered thunderstorms north of Sacramento that caused the tornado to form, Keeton said.

No other details were immediately available.?
