Kim Mather from the Department of Rehabilitation shakes hands with John Ford at the Ukiah Conference Center during the Mendocino Private Industry Council's job fair on Wednesday. Mather was helping attendees by offering them information about jobs with the State of California.

At least three new businesses were looking for employees Wednesday at the latest job fair hosted by the Mendocino Private Industry Council.

"We wanted to have it in October, right before the holiday season," said Ann Beauchamp, a business services representative with MPIC, which helps match employers with people seeking work. Beauchamp said the agency has been hosting two such fairs a year: one in May for summer hiring and one in the fall.

She said turnout was fairly strong, with about 80 job seekers showing up by 1 p.m.

And one of the businesses looking for workers was Aaron's, which just opened up on North State Street where World Gym used to be. The store sells rent-to-own furniture, appliances and electronics.

"We're looking for customer service representatives," said Regional Manager Fred Tahami, adding that he received resumes from "solid candidates" Wednesday.

Tahami said the chain is based in Atlanta and recently began expanding into Northern California, opening in cities such as Eureka and Napa as well as Ukiah. He said so far the store has had a "soft opening."

The second business, Crush Italian Steakhouse, has yet to open. It moved into the former Branches location on Airport Park Boulevard, and MPIC Business Services Representative Stacey Caico said plans are to open at least part of the restaurant by the end of this month.

"The dining room will be open for dinner, and the pub will be open for lunch and dinner," Caico said, adding that

the plan is to open the pub Nov. 24 and the restaurant by Dec. 1.

The business was looking for 75 people for both the "front" and "back" of the restaurant, and a hiring event was held in late October. Caico said 84 people attended and 58 of those were offered jobs.

Caico was still accepting resumes for the remaining jobs Wednesday.

Another planned new business that hasn't opened yet is the Hopland Ale House. Owner Jennifer Sullivan said her goal was to open in about three weeks, but she didn't have a definitive date yet.

"It's a dream come true," Sullivan said of the pub-like restaurant she's planning to open in the former site of the Mendocino Brewing Company, which she said she fell in love with after first getting a burger there in 2000.

Stopping there became a tradition for the former Bay Area resident, who said she was "heartbroken" to see the place had closed, then elated to see a "For Lease" sign.

"I fell in love with the space and the county," said Sullivan, adding that she moved to Hopland in April and plans to bar tend at the ale house during the week. She said she was still looking for "back of the house" employees such as a weekend bus person and a prep cook and had accepted a few resumes Wednesday.
