Don?t fit the demographic. Not into witches (unless they?re called Willow). Didn?t expect to enjoy it. Pleasantly surprised!
Surprised and entertained. I met two young leads I knew nothing about in a story I could only surmise from the shorts and I enjoyed it. Although I would have enjoyed it more if it had all been in focus and the look of the film stock had been consistent. I am not sure if that was the film itself or the projector at the cinema, so I will not condemn it on technical grounds.
It is based on a book ? the first in the New York Times bestselling book series The Caster Chronicles, by Kami Garcia and Margaret Stohl, which are YA fiction ? because all young adult fiction is written in series isn?t it? Therefore I assume then that the pivotal sex scene (I am guessing they have sex) is just a cutaway to a burning sign (gosh, it?s almost old school Hollywood) to keep the rating low enough for fans of the books to see the film. So of course there will be more films ? or not. The books get universally good reviews but most film reviews seem lacklustre. However I would reiterate that I was entertained.
I enjoyed the zingy comebacks and one-liners but I am not sure whether these are in the book or not. Richard LaGravenese (great name) is known more as a diverse screenwriter, adapting and creating scripts (Freedom Writers, The Bridges of Madison County, The Fisher King and many more). However he also directed Freedom Writers and PS I Love You, amongst others.
His direction in this is workmanlike and somehow quaintly old-fashioned. Perhaps because it is shot in a ?regular? way without too many stunt shots or gratuitous CGI, perhaps LaGravenese meant it to have that look. Apparently he didn?t want too much CGI and resorted to moving floors and harnesses for one showy scene where dueling witches revolve around a rotating table.
The overall look of the film is stylish, with a ?tongues placed lightly in one?s cheek? image of a backwards, backwoods, small Southern town and the magnificently garbed supernatural family on the doorstep. Alice Englert and Alden Ehrenreich are not Hollywood cookie cutter cute but almost look like real teens. His quirky mannerisms and her restraint (when she could have gone so far over the top) were refreshing.
Given the wealth of talent in the support roles (Jeremy Irons, Emma Thompson, Viola Davis) the leads must have been inspired to do well, but for Alice Englert it might also be in the genes ? she is Jane Campion?s daughter. And wrote and sang a song for the soundtrack. Talented girl.
