'Welcome to Ford Nation': Mayor's backyard party draws crowds

?Welcome Ford Nation,? read the giant banner atop the pool building in the backyard of the family home.

Judging by the T-shirts in the crowd, Mayor Rob Ford?s supporters in 2010 remain a force today.

They?re feeling a little battered by their man?s conflict-of-interest troubles but are still defiant.

?I hope to God he beats the rap,? said retired postie Boyd Wilson, who delivered mail to the Fords.

?A lot of people are trying to run him down, I don?t know why.?

Ford?s annual barbecue, to which the entire city was invited this year, attracted a large crowd which was entertained by a band belting out ?60s tunes as people worked through some 4,000 hot dogs and an equal number of hamburgers. There were long lines for the barbecue and the bar.

Police officers stopped traffic on Royal York Rd. to let partygoers cross over from the mall where they had parked.

Officers moved pylons so Councillor Doug Ford could turn his SUV on to his mother?s street.

One of the invitees was firefighter union president Ed Kennedy, attending for the first time.

?It?s amazing the size of this backyard,? Kennedy said.

Former councillor Chris Korwin-Kuczynski said the Fords deserve credit for inviting the entire city to their mom?s.

?He?s the first mayor who?s ever done this,? said Korwin-Kuczynski, now a city hall lobbyist. ?I think it?s fabulous.?

The man who moved the motion at council that landed Ford in trouble said people support the mayor.

Councillor Paul Ainslie, one of only a handful of councillors in attendance, said Ford shouldn?t have used city letterhead to seek donations to his football foundation.

But Ainslie didn?t see it as a major transgression.

?On this one Rob fumbled the ball, but do you kick him out of the league??

The mayor arrived about 7:30 p.m. and greeted well-wishers in the driveway of the Weston Wood Rd. residence.

?Four more years,? yelled an enthusiastic supporter.

Ford is halfway through his first term.

In a 10-minute speech, Ford stressed his record of cutting politicians? perks and said the campaign for the 2014 election has started against a determined group of left-wing politicians who want to unseat him.

?The tax-and-spend people want to take it back (the mayor's office) and they're not getting it back,? Ford said.
