AOL COO Artie Minson Is Leaving, Susan Lyne - Business Insider

AOL COO Artie Minson is stepping down.

Eventually, he's going to leave the company.

Right now,?Susan Lyne, formerly of Gilt and Martha Stewart, will step in as CEO of Brands.

Running brands was one of Minson's responsibilities.

Lots of people give Artie Minson credit for getting AOL as healthy as it is.

One of these people is CEO Tim Armstrong, who says in a release:

?In his role first as CFO and most recently as COO, Artie has done an extraordinary job of optimizing AOL?s assets and has created a tremendous amount of value for shareholders. Artie has played a key role in the turnaround of AOL and that will continue in 2013 during the transition period.?

Minson got his start optimizing subscriptions at Time Warner Cable, and then brought the same expertise to AOL to great effect.

Minson will stick around and report to Armstrong during a transition period that could last as long as a year.

This move makes sense. AOL's growth opportunity is as a media company. Minson isn't really a media executive the way Lyne is.

Here's the release:

Susan Lyne, Vice Chairman of Gilt and AOL board member, has been appointed to run AOL?s portfolio of brands that serve over 100 million consumers globally.

Lyne will oversee all aspects of the Brand Group?s growth strategy, including increasing traffic across properties, maximizing partnerships with advertisers and publishers, and attracting top talent, with a particular focus on content, design, programming, and product.

?In her roles as CEO then Chairman of Gilt, and previously as President and CEO of Martha Stewart Living Omnimedia, Susan has a proven track record of brand building and aggressive growth,? said Tim Armstrong, Chairman and CEO. ?I know she?ll bring that same drive and growth-oriented mentality to our Brand Group. AOL ended 2012 growing revenue for the first time in eight years, and we expect Susan to help build on this momentum and take our brands to the next level.?

?In my three years as an AOL board member, I have partnered with Tim Armstrong and my fellow directors to help drive the company?s transformation, and have seen AOL make great strides as it continues to innovate, grow and evolve,? Lyne said. ??I?m looking forward to contributing to the company?s continued evolution in my new role, and will focus on creating additional value with all of AOL?s premium brands. ?Our efforts center on making all of our brands true destinations for audiences worldwide, and to provide marketers with innovative opportunities to connect with these audiences.?

Lyne recently transitioned from her role as Chairman of Gilt to become Vice Chairman. ?She will continue in that role.

In addition to her roles at Gilt and Martha Stewart Living Omnimedia, Lyne brings a decade of experience in the television industry, including serving as President of ABC Entertainment, where she oversaw the development of shows such as Desperate Housewives, Lost, and Grey?s Anatomy. ?Lyne?s convergence of experience, encompassing media, television and the digital industry, will be particularly valuable to AOL.

Lyne?s appointment is part of AOL?s continued efforts to streamline its operations and give its business unit leaders more autonomy and accountability. AOL has three business units ?The Membership Group, which consists of offerings that serve AOL account holders, AOL Networks, which consists of AOL's offerings to publishers and advertisers utilizing AOL?s third-party advertising network, and the Brand Group, which consists of AOL's portfolio of distinct and unique content brands. All three business units were overseen by AOL?s Chief Operating Officer, Arthur ?Artie? Minson, who will stay with the company for a transition period.

?In his role first as CFO and most recently as COO, Artie has done an extraordinary job of optimizing AOL?s assets and has created a tremendous amount of value for shareholders,? Armstrong said. ?Artie has played a key role in the turnaround of AOL and that will continue in 2013 during the transition period.?

??I came back to AOL three and a half years ago with the goal of returning AOL to being a growth company,? said Minson.? ?With that accomplished, I have decided to stay and continue to work closely with Tim during this transition period. I look forward to AOL?s continued success.??

Louse genetics offer clues on human migrations

Thursday, February 28, 2013

A new genetic analysis of human lice from across the world sheds light on the global spread of these parasites, their potential for disease transmission and insecticide resistance. The results are published February 27 in the open access journal PLOS ONE by Marina S. Ascunce and colleagues from the Florida Museum of Natural History, University of Florida.

Lice have been constant travel companions for humans ever since they left Africa and began colonizing other parts of the world. Since they have evolved along with humans, the geographic distribution of lice can reveal patterns of human migrations.

In the present research, the authors used available genomic data from human lice to identify genetic markers that can be used to determine which louse populations bred with one another. Their results improve our understanding of how lice have evolved resistance to insecticides, and can help improve methods of controlling these pests. These genetic markers can also be used to understand the differences between head and clothing lice, since the latter are capable of transmitting deadly bacterial diseases.

The authors suggest that these genetic markers may also reveal the tracks of human migrations across the globe, and can be used to test ideas about human evolution.

Heat win 12th straight, outlast Kings in 2OT

MIAMI (AP) ? LeBron James had 40 points and a career-high 16 assists, Dwyane Wade scored 39 and the Miami Heat pushed their winning streak to 12 games by outlasting the Sacramento Kings 141-129 in double overtime on Tuesday night.

Ray Allen added 21, Chris Bosh finished with 15 and Chris Andersen had 10 for the Heat, who remained six games clear of second-place Indiana in the Eastern Conference standings.

Miami's 12-game winning streak is the longest in the NBA and matches the second-longest in franchise history.

"Our ball club, we don't get rattled, no matter what's going on during the course of the game," James said. "If it's overtime, double-overtime, we find a way to win."

Marcus Thornton scored 36 points for Sacramento, the most by any reserve in the NBA this season. DeMarcus Cousins finished with 24 points and 15 rebounds, Tyreke Evans added 26 points, John Salmons 15 and Isaiah Thomas 14 for the Kings.

James became the first NBA player to finish with at least 40 points and 16 assists since Kevin Johnson ? now the mayor of Sacramento ? had 42 and 17 for Phoenix against Denver on April 3, 1994.

"Even with a double-overtime game, those are video game numbers," Heat coach Erik Spoelstra said, noting that he told Wade the same after his 19-for-28 shooting effort in 46 minutes.

And for the month, James finished 139 for 217 from the floor ? 64.1 percent, by far the best of his career.

Kings coach Keith Smart said before the game that sometimes "great teams get a little bored with the regular season and they need something to get them going."

The Heat didn't seem to be bored by the second overtime.

After a late non-call that James wanted, he simply seemed mad.

James scored inside to open the second extra session, yelling "and one" at referees as his way of insisting he was fouled as well. But after one sensational sequence, the game was pretty much sealed.

Thornton had a chance to give the Kings the lead after a Heat turnover, but his shot at the rim was blocked by Wade, who came down and set up James for a 3-pointer ? a five-point swing, in essence, and the Heat had a 131-127 lead. James scored again, then added two free throws and found Bosh for a dunk and 10-point lead with 1:29 remaining.

Sacramento lost its sixth straight and fell to 1-16 against Miami since March 2004.

"No matter what their record is, they made plays just like us. They gave everything they had and more," James said.

The Heat missed key free throws late in both regulation and the first overtime ? Wade missing a pair with 21 seconds left in the fourth, and James missed one of two with 29.3 seconds left in the opening extra session.

In the first OT, the Kings had a chance for the late lead and potentially the win, but Thomas had a layup blocked by Bosh, and Allen grabbed the rebound for the Heat with 5.7 seconds left.

Miami put the ball in Wade's hands, and he found James near the basket. James' shot missed, and he complained he was fouled by Salmons on the attempt. Referees disagreed with that, but after a lengthy review to determine possession, they awarded Miami the ball with 0.4 seconds remaining. It was much ado for nothing, as Bosh's shot sailed long and the teams went to double overtime.

The game was tied at 92 midway through the fourth before Wade ? with six points and an assist ? led a 13-4 run that looked like it would give Miami breathing room. Miami was up 105-96, and still led 112-104 when James scored with 1:40 remaining.

Sacramento roared back, scoring the final eight points of regulation. Thornton hit a pair of 3-pointers, the second coming with 23 seconds left to get the Kings within 112-110. And after Wade missed a pair of free throws, Cousins grabbed an offensive rebound and laid it back with 8.5 seconds remaining to knot the game at 112-all.

Out of a timeout, the Heat went to Wade, whose step-back 20-footer bounced off the rim as time expired, sending it to overtime.

They were just getting started. And when it was over, the Heat streak survived.

"We're coming together," James said. "We're doing it the right way. We're executing offensively. We're sharing the ball. And we're not getting rattled. We've been in some crazy games. We just stay the course and figure out a way to get the victory."

NOTES: Miami finished February with a 12-1 record, with the one loss to start the month. ... The Heat have allowed 68 third-quarter points in their last two games, both at home. They gave up 67 third-quarter points in their previous three games, all on the road. ... One day after celebrating his 24th birthday, Kings G Jimmer Fredette did not play. ... The Heat played without F Shane Battier, sidelined by right hamstring tightness. He's day-to-day.

A Routine Screening That Could Save Your Life

Feb 27, 2013 9:35am

Katie?s Take

March is National Colorectal Cancer Awareness Month, and Katie Couric wants you to get screened! After losing her husband, Jay Monahan, to colon cancer in 1998, Couric co-founded The Jay Monahan Center for Gastrointestinal Health in New York City. The clinic focuses on prevention, diagnosis, treatment and support for people suffering from gastrointestinal cancers.

Katie met with the Director of the Jay Monahan Center, Dr. Felice Schnoll-Sussman, to talk about the importance of getting screened, and about the center?s ?Make That Call? campaign ? which urges people 50 and older to get screened.

Of cancers that affect both men and women, colorectal cancer is the second leading cause of cancer-related deaths in the United States.? In 2013, 143,000 people will be diagnosed and 50,000 will not survive the disease. The statistics are startling, especially considering that the disease is preventable. The key is early detection through proper screening.

Everyone over the age of 50 should get screened. This is not to say that the disease does not affect people under 50, and so people should be aware of the symptoms of colorectal cancer. If you are experiencing bloating, unexpected weight gain, change in bowel habits, or blood in your stool, it is time to make an appointment. The screening is simple, painless and can be life-saving.

For more information, visit www.makethatcall.org. Katie and Dr. Schnoll-Sussman urge you to ?Make that Call? and get your screening today!

Horse meat sold in beef products in Hungary - watchdog

BUDAPEST (Reuters) - Horse meat labelled as beef has been sold in Hungary, the National Food Chain Safety Office (Nebih) said on Tuesday.

Gyorgy Pleva, director of Nebih told television channel TV2 that the authorities were looking into three separate cases of suspected horse meat found at the retail and wholesale level.

"Horse meat certainly got into (shops)," he said, adding that all the shipments investigated by the authority took place last year.

Horse meat has been found in beef products across Europe in recent weeks, damaging confidence in the continent's vast and complex food industry.

A small amount of hamburger meat containing horse meat was sold last summer in a Hungarian restaurant, Pleva said, without disclosing the origin of the product.

The Hungarian distributor of food brand Nowaco will withdraw a lasagne product in a few days, which is suspected of containing horse meat, he added.

"What we can say is that even if there is such a product, that will be taken off from the shelves within days," he said.

DNA tests in the Czech Republic have shown that two batches of frozen Nowaco Lasagne Bolognese in a branch of the Tesco supermarket chain contained horse meat, and authorities said the products listed Luxembourg as the country of origin.

Pleva said another lasagne product, which was made in Hungary, was also being probed based on a report from Denmark, the intended destination of the product. He did not clarify whether this product got into Danish shops and could not immediately be reached for further comment.

Family missing at sea: An unsolved mystery (+video)

Family missing at sea: A family of four, including two children, issued a distress call from their sailboat Sunday. But they're still missing at sea. Who are they? Where are they?

By Staff,?Associated Press / February 26, 2013

The family radioed for help, from a position 68 miles off the coast of Monterey, Calif.

Authorities have turned to the public in hopes of identifying a family that sent a series of distress calls saying their boat was sinking far off the Central California coast.

"There is still no information on where the boat was coming from, where it was going or who the people on board are," said Coast?Guard Chief Petty Officer Mike Lutz.

The unidentified family of four ? including two children under 8 ? had been sailing a small vessel Sunday west of Monterey Bay. Forecasters had issued a weekend advisory warning boaters of rough seas in the area, and water temperatures typically are in the 40s and 50s, making long-term survival difficult.

The group made its first distress call late Sunday afternoon, Coast?Guard Lt. Heather Lampert said. Investigators used the boat's radio signal and radar to determine the call came from an area about 60 miles west of Monterey.

The boaters reported that their 29-foot sailboat was taking on water and the electronics were failing.

Crews planned to search by sea and air through the night Monday to find the family, who said in the calls that they were fashioning a raft from a cooler and a life-preserver ring before they lost contact with the Coast?Guard.

"We will just saturate the search area with as many assets as we can, so we can hopefully rescue them," Lutz said.

The Coast?Guard released one of the family's recorded distress calls (http://bit.ly/W90cyv ), in hopes that it would lead to new information from the public that could help in the search. So far the agency has received no reports of missing persons in the case.

The agency believes the boat's name was Charmblow. In the crackling recording, a man's voice is heard saying, "Coast?Guard, Coast?Guard, we are abandoning ship. This is the (Charmblow), we are abandoning ship."

Investigators determined from the broken distress calls that the family included a husband and wife, their 4-year-old son and his cousin, Lampert said.

The boat's location initially was reported farther north, but Lampert said investigators now believe the call came from west of Monterey Bay, about 100 miles south of San Francisco. The boat did not have a working GPS system.

Calls to harbors in California have failed to locate the boat, and database searches have come up empty, Lampert said. The Coast?Guard was expanding its search to Hawaii, the Seattle area and north into Canada.

Pharmacist sentenced to 2 years Pa. steroids case

PITTSBURGH (AP) ? A pharmacist has been sentenced to 2? years in federal prison after pleading guilty to helping a former Pittsburgh Steelers team doctor illegally distribute anabolic steroids in an investigation spun off from a national crackdown on the performance enhancing drugs.

William Sadowski, 47, of Robinson Township, pleaded guilty in November to conspiracy to possess with intent to distribute anabolic steroids and human growth hormones, or HGH, and was sentenced Tuesday by Senior U.S. District Judge Maurice Cohill Jr.

Sadowski has acknowledged helping Dr. Richard Rydze illegally distribute the body-building substances and other drugs used to prevent their negative side effects or, at least, mask their use. On Tuesday, the married father of two told the judge he let greed and profit cloud his judgment.

"I started worrying more about the bottom line than doing the right thing the right way," Sadowski said, tearfully.

Rydze, 62, has denied wrongdoing, pleaded not guilty and is awaiting trial in the alleged steroids conspiracy that began a few months after the Steelers cut him from their medical staff in 2007 after more than two decades.

The team and Rydze have previously said he didn't supply steroids to Steelers players, though the investigation that targeted Rydze and Sadowski spun off from a national probe that included Applied Pharmacy Services in Mobile, Ala., which was identified as a supplier in U.S. Sen. George Mitchell's landmark 2007 report on steroid use in Major League Baseball.

The Alabama pharmacy was raided in August 2006 and shut down by the federal Drug Enforcement Agency. Its customer list included baseball players, including Gary Matthews Jr., some World Wrestling Entertainment personalities, and former heavyweight boxing champ Evander Holyfield, who has denied using steroids, let alone obtaining them from APS. The Alabama raid resulted in the conviction of five staff pharmacists, and several doctors across the country who obtained steroids illegally through the pharmacy.

Assistant U.S. Attorney Matthew Kall argued that Sadowski deserved prison to deter other pharmacists, and because he knew he was operating his Pittsburgh-based ANEWrx pharmacy illegally.

"He was essentially living a double life," Kall said, referring to 20 friends and family members there to support Sadowski.

Among other things, Kall said Sadowski "took over" the Alabama pharmacy's business once it shut down. Sadowski also faces sentencing March 4 in Allegheny County Common Pleas Court for filing fraudulent Medicare claims at a previous pharmacy, Kall said.

Sadowski's defense attorney in that case, James Wymard, attended the federal court sentencing and said he's hopeful Sadowski's sentence on those charges, filed by the Pennsylvania attorney general's office, will run concurrent to the federal sentence.

Federal prosecutors said Sadowski's pharmacy was licensed to dispense prescription drugs in at least 44 states and that he hired a registered nurse, John Gavin, 51, to "research the status of criminal prosecutions across the county for illegal distribution of anabolic steroids and HGH." Sadowski's pharmacy allegedly developed drug combinations, or "stacks," that included steroids, HGH and other substances ? many used to legitimately treat breast cancer and other maladies ? that, when taken with the steroids, were meant to prevent their undesirable side effects.

Gavin has previously pleaded guilty and is scheduled for sentencing March 26.

Rydze's patient base was so broad in Pittsburgh that federal authorities took the unusual step of having FBI agents from Ohio investigate. Kall, the prosecutor who handled Tuesday's sentencing, is also based in Cleveland, where U.S. Attorney's spokesman Michael Tobin declined comment on the sentencing.

Among other things, Rydze had a contract to perform physicals for the agents who worked at the Pittsburgh FBI office, and at least one staff member in the U.S. Attorney's Office in Pittsburgh was a patient of Rydze's. Neither that person nor any FBI agent is accused of obtaining steroids from the doctor.

N.H. GOP lawmaker: Some people may 'like being in abusive ...

During a committee debate on whether or not to reduce the penalty for simple assault,?a New Hampshire state lawmaker on Tuesday suggested that certain people may like being involved in abusive relationships.

The remarks were caught on camera by Granite State Progress, a liberal advocacy group, during a meeting of the House Criminal Justice and Public Safety to discuss a bill that would change the penalty on assault from a misdemeanor crime to a violation-level offense in some cases.

?Some people could make the argument that a lot of people like being in abusive relationships,? said state Rep. Mark Warden, a Republican. ?It?s a love-hate relationship. It?s very, very common for people to stick around with somebody they love who also abuses him or her.?

Warden?told the?Concord Monitor?that his words were ?taken out of context,? but refused to comment further.

According to the video, Warden continued, ?Is the solution to those kind of dysfunctional relationships going to be more government, another law? I tend to say no. People are always free to leave.?

Warden was one of four committee members to vote in favor of the bill. The committee ultimately voted, 16-4, to recommend the full House kill the bill.

Pope to be called 'emeritus pope,' will wear white

VATICAN CITY (AP) ? Pope Benedict XVI will be known as "emeritus pope" in his retirement and will continue to wear a white cassock, the Vatican announced Tuesday, again fueling concerns about potential conflicts arising from having both a reigning and a retired pope.

The pope's title and what he would wear has been a major source of speculation ever since Benedict stunned the world and announced he would resign on Thursday, the first pontiff to do so in 600 years.

The Vatican spokesman, the Rev. Federico Lombardi, said Benedict himself had made the decision in consultation with others, settling on "Your Holiness Benedict XVI" and either emeritus pope or emeritus Roman pontiff.

Lombardi said he didn't know why Benedict had decided to drop his other main title: bishop of Rome.

In the two weeks since Benedict's resignation announcement, Vatican officials had suggested that Benedict would likely resume wearing the traditional black garb of a cleric and would use the title "emeritus bishop of Rome" so as to not create confusion with the future pope.

Benedict's decision to call himself emeritus pope and to keep wearing white is sure to fan concern voiced privately by some cardinals about the awkward reality of having two popes, both living within the Vatican walls.

Adding to the concern is that Benedict's trusted secretary, Monsignor Georg Gaenswein, will be serving both pontiffs ? living with Benedict at the monastery inside the Vatican and keeping his day job as prefect of the new pope's household.

Asked about the potential conflicts, Lombardi was defensive, saying the decisions had been clearly reasoned and were likely chosen for the sake of simplicity.

"I believe it was well thought out," he said.

Benedict himself has made clear he is retiring to a lifetime of prayer and meditation "hidden from the world." However, he still will be very present in the tiny Vatican city-state, where his new home is right next door to the Vatican Radio and has a lovely view of the dome of St. Peter's Basilica.

While he will no longer wear his trademark red shoes, Benedict has taken a liking to a pair of hand-crafted brown loafers made for him by artisans in Leon, Mexico, and given to him during his 2012 visit. He will wear those in retirement, Lombardi said.

Lombardi also elaborated on the College of Cardinals meetings that will take place after the papacy becomes vacant ? crucial gatherings in which cardinals will discuss the problems facing the church and set a date for the start of the conclave to elect Benedict's successor.

The first meeting isn't now expected until Monday, Lombardi said, since the official convocation to cardinals to come to Rome will only go out on Friday ? the first day of what's known as the "sede vacante," or the vacancy between papacies.

In all, 115 cardinals under the age of 80 are expected in Rome for the conclave to vote on who should become the next pope; two other eligible cardinals have already said they are not coming, one from Britain and another from Indonesia. Cardinals who are 80 and older can join the College meetings but won't participate in the conclave or vote.

Benedict on Monday gave the cardinals the go-ahead to move up the start date of the conclave ? tossing out the traditional 15-day waiting period. But the cardinals won't actually set a date for the conclave until they begin meeting officially Monday.

Lombardi also further described Benedict's final 48 hours as pope: On Tuesday, he was packing, arranging for documents to be sent to the various archives at the Vatican and separating out the personal papers he will take with him into retirement.

On Wednesday, Benedict will hold his final public general audience in St. Peter's Square ? an event that has already seen 50,000 ticket requests. He won't greet visiting prelates or VIPs as he normally does at the end but will greet some visiting political leaders ? from San Marino, Andorra and his native Bavaria ? privately afterwards.

On Thursday, the pope meets with his cardinals in the morning and then flies by helicopter at 5 p.m. to Castel Gandolfo, the papal residence south of Rome. He will greet parishioners there from the palazzo's loggia (balcony) ? his final public act as pope.

And at 8 p.m., the exact time at which his retirement becomes official, the Swiss Guards standing outside the doors of the palazzo at Castel Gandolfo will go inside, their service protecting the head of the Catholic Church now finished.

Benedict's personal security will be assured by Vatican police, Lombardi said.

Inbound Marketing Campaign Requires Patience | Internet ...

Inbound marketing is all the rage at the moment. It is the notion that you get customers to come to you, rather than you go out and find them. That has been a ?holy grail? for business for decades. Indeed, one of my favourite books is ?Getting Business To Come To You? which was published before much of this Internet malarkey had been invented. Wouldn?t it be marvellous if people just discovered your business, that you did not have to go out and promote yourself?

Just think of it ? no more cold calls, no more trudging round door-to-door, no more dreary networking meetings, no more stale exhibition halls. Instead, you just sit at your desk and the phone rings and the online cash register keeps on going ?ka-ching?.? It sounds a dream world, yet many online businesses are discovering that you can certainly reduce your marketing efforts if you use ?inbound marketing?, which means people come to you because they already know about you. But how?

The answer to inbound marketing is simply adding content to your web presence. The more web content you add, the more frequently you do it, then the greater the chances of people stumbling across your stuff as they wander the web. But each time I talk to businesses about that they say ?tried that, but it doesn?t really work?.

Yet, I can show them examples of businesses who have turned their marketing department into an online publishing business and who have seen significant growth as a result. I can give them links? to business blogs in tiny niche areas which have become the principal source of new business leads for those firms. Even so, business leaders still say to me ?tried it, but it didn?t work for us?.

However, new research from the folks at HubSpot now reveals why businesses think like that. The study involved over 5,000 companies who use the Internet to market their products and services, so it is substantial information. The research also includes input from over 250 business marketing experts, so the data is significant. And this is what it tells us:

Inbound Marketing Takes Six Months To Work

That?s right ? you are not going to start to see the benefits from any inbound marketing activity for around six months. True, the study did show that 17% of companies did get more traffic to their website in a few weeks, but for 68% of firms it was 7 months before anything happened. That?s over 200 days of relentless, continual adding content before most firms see anything happen in terms of additional interest in their online business.

Inbound Marketing Delays

Few business leaders want to wait that long. They are fuelled with the ?instant? online world we live in and expect to see additional traffic and new lead generation within weeks, if not days. They want to see a return on their investment in content production far sooner than the back end of the year.

The reason why so many businesses are saying ?we tried that, but it didn?t work? is because they are giving up too soon.

To be fair to HubSpot, they have always said that inbound marketing is a ?slow burn? ? indeed, they say they are surprised by the data, because it does show that some people do indeed get a rapid benefit from inbound marketing. The company has always preached patience.

So, what do you need to do in order to get business to come to you online?

Firstly, as the HubSpot research shows, the biggest benefit comes from blogging. And the companies who receive the most benefit blog EVERY DAY or MORE. So get your scribbling pens out?!

Secondly, the research confirms that you need regular ?calls to action? in order to benefit from inbound marketing.

So, if you don?t know how to organise them, please contact me?! Oh whoops ? there?s a call to action for you?!

But whatever you do ? be patient?! As this study shows, for the vast majority of people to benefit from inbound marketing it takes six or seven months. Inbound marketing is NOT a quick fix. But it certainly does lead business to come to you.

Adele's ?Skyfall? Performance At The Oscars: Review Revue

Did The Critics Find Adele's Performance Oscar-Worthy?

Professional awards magnet Adele can now add an Oscar to her growing collection, after her win at last night?s Academy Awards for her James Bond theme ?Skyfall.? And, believe it or not, this is the first time a 007 tune has won in the Best Original Song category!

At any rate, Adele also performed at the ceremony. Some critics were a bit nonplussed over the vocal mix, citing the fact that the London songstress? pipes were drowned out by the orchestra. Still, most were in agreement that the singer herself brought her A game to the Academy?s big night. See our roundup of what the Internet had to say about Adele?s performance of ?Skyfall? below.

:: The Los Angeles Timesfelt Shirley Bassey and Adele?s Bond songs saved the night: ?Like Bassey, she doesn?t succumb to the drama inherent in the song?s big-band orchestration. Adele practically tunes it out, and though Oscar host Seth MacFarlane joked earlier that Adele would be ?shouting? at the audience, she did anything but, keeping her vocals low and her tone slyly conversational.?

:: MTV found nothing to gripe about: ?Adele let loose with her very own James Bond tribute on Sunday night?s (February 24) Oscars. Done up in sequined all-black everything, the diva gave a flawless performance of the theme song for ?Skyfall?.?

:: HitFix felt Adele?s vocals could have been more prominent in the mix: ?All night, the house orchestra tended to overpower vocals ? including on other powerhouse performances from 007-famed Shirley Bassey and Dreamgirls Oscars winner Jennifer Hudson. While Adele kept her kinder notes understated like in the recording, her backing band seemed to challenge her. Great performance on her part, but an iffy mix.?

:: Hollywood.com also lamented the vocal mix: ?In her first televised performance since giving birth to her child, Adele belted out Skyfall?s title track to the excitement of many. But from the second she stepped out on that Oscar stage (introduced by America?s other favorite no-filter queen, Jennifer Lawrence), the emotional rollercoaster we were ready to board was not ready for us. The mix seemed to overpower Adele ? an impressive feat considering the strength the singer holds in her incredible vocal chords ? and she seemed visibly frustrated through the entirety.?

:: Billboard was blown away: ?With hair down and gold sequined black dress shimmering, Adele did her trademark stand-and-sway and this-big hand gestures as a full chorus and massive backing band (complete with a 15-plus orchestra) brought the layered, building track home.?

:: E! concurred: ?It was a simple setup: Some glittery jewels hanging as a backdrop, a band and Adele, with her killer voice and and the sparkliest dress we ever did see. And as with all things that Adele does, we think it was perfect.?

:: Finally, Chart Rigger had this to say: ?I truly love Adele?s Platinum-selling ?Skyfall,? and think it deserved to win the Golden Globe, BRIT Award and, now, Academy Award that its racked up. And while her performance of the James Bond theme at the Oscars last night was truly grand, it was really Dame Shirley Bassey who stole the effing show with ?Goldfinger?.?

What do you think of Oscar winner Adele?s performance of ?Skyfall?? Hit us up below with your thoughts, or let us know on Facebook and Twitter!

Misha Collins promoted to 'Supernatural' regular

The CW

By Drusilla Moorhouse, TODAY contributor

Well, this is "Supernatural" news to set our hearts aflutter. Misha Collins, who plays anguished angel Castiel on the CW drama, will return as a series regular for season nine.

"I don't think the feathers to the offices campaign was what saved the angel, but it does look like i'm going to be a regular for season 9," the amusing actor tweeted Monday.

Castiel has been a fan favorite ever since his introduction in season four. His death in season eight sparked outrage among supporters of the socially awkward angel, who was resurrected -- along with his rocking trenchcoat -- this season.

Like co-star Jensen Ackles, Collins will stretch his wings behind the camera: He's also set to direct an episode in the ninth season of the cult hit, which was officially renewed Feb. 11.

"Supernatural" airs Wednesdays at 9 p.m. on The CW.

Ship noise makes crabs get crabby

Feb. 26, 2013 ? A new study published in Biology Letters found that ship noise affects crab metabolism, with largest crabs faring worst, and found little evidence that crabs acclimatise to noise over time.

The team from the Universities of Bristol and Exeter found that crabs exposed to recordings of ship noise showed an increase in metabolic rate, indicating elevated stress. In the real world this could have implications for growth and, if the metabolic cost of noise causes crabs to spend more time foraging to compensate, could also increase the risk of predation.

Researcher Matt Wale from Bristol's School of Biological Sciences describes the study: "We used controlled experiments to consider how shore crabs of different sizes respond to both single and repeated exposure to playback of ship noise. Ship noise is the most common source of noise in the aquatic environment."

Explains Dr Andy Radford, Reader in Behavioural Ecology at Bristol: "We found that the metabolic rate of crabs exposed to ship noise was higher than those experiencing ambient harbour noise, and that larger individuals were affected most strongly. This is the first indication that there might be different responses to noise depending on the size of an individual."

If commercially important crabs and lobsters are affected by noise, these findings have implications for fisheries in busy shipping areas where large individuals may be losing out. Conversely, if reducing noise reduces metabolic costs, then quietening aquaculture facilities may lead to higher yields.

Dr Steve Simpson from the University of Exeter warned: "Since larger crabs are affected more strongly by noise this could have implications for fisheries in noisy areas. Also, many crustacean species, particularly prawns, are grown in aquaculture, so if acoustic disturbance has a metabolic cost then operational noise in farms may impact on growth, and quieter farms may be more profitable."

Intersect ENT Lands $30M From Norwest, Kleiner, USVP & More For Its Innovative Sinus Drug & Device Combo

logo_lgIn August 2011, Intersect won approval from the FDA for Propel, which, simply put, is a stent that doctors implant in the sinuses after surgery to help keep them open. The cool part is that, over time, the stent absorbs into the patient's body post-surgery (so that follow-up surgery isn't required), slowly releasing a steroid to help control local inflammation, according to Medgadget. In the fall of last year, the company won approval again for the Propel Mini, a miniaturized version of its flagship product designed for "less extensive surgeries," Medgadget says.

'Vulcan' and 'Cerberus' are favorite names for Pluto's moons

The online poll for naming Pluto's moons ? P4 and P5 ? is now over and the winning names are 'Vulcan' and 'Cerberus.' This result, however, doesn't guarantee that P4 and P5 will actually get these names.

By Miriam Kramer,?SPACE.com / February 26, 2013

A pair of small moons orbiting Pluto named Nix and Hydra were discovered by NASA's Hubble Space Telescope in 2005. The two moons are roughly 5,000 times fainter than Pluto and are about two to three times farther from Pluto than its large moon.

The votes are in, and it looks like 'Vulcan' could be the new name for one of Pluto's smallest moons.

After weeks of online ballot casting by people around the world, the poll asking the public to name two of Pluto's moons ? currently called P4 and P5 ? ended Monday.

As of 12 p.m. (1700 GMT)?Feb. 25, the polls closed with a total of 450,324 total votes cast since Feb. 11 with 'Vulcan,' a?Pluto moon name proposed by Star Trek's William Shatner,?is the clear winner.

"174,062 votes and Vulcan came out on top of the voting for the naming of Pluto's moons. Thank you to all who voted! MBB," wrote Shatner via Twitter.

Cerberus came in a clear second with nearly 100,000 votes.

Vulcan was a late addition to the Pluto moon name contenders, and pulled into the lead after Shatner, building on his Capt. James T. Kirk persona, plugged the name on Twitter. Vulcan, the home planet of Kirk's alien-human hybrid first officer Spock, is not just a fictional world in the Star Trek universe. It is also the name of the god of fire in Roman mythology, and officials at SETI added the sci-fi favorite to the ballot for that reason.

"Vulcan is the Roman god of lava and smoke, and the nephew of Pluto. (Any connection to the Star Trek TV series is purely coincidental, although we can be sure that Gene Roddenberry read the classics.)," wrote SETI scientist Mark Showalter in a blog officially adding the name to the list on Feb. 12. "Thanks to William Shatner for the suggestion!"

These votes don't necessarily mean that P4 and P5 will end up being called Vulcan and Cerberus, however. SETI is going to recommend the winning names to the International Astronomical Union ? the organization responsible for naming the moons. The IAU will take the results into consideration, but ultimately they have final say over what the tiny moons are called.

Pluto has five moons??that astronomers currently know of. Scientists first caught sight of Pluto's largest moon Charon in 1978, but it was not until 2005 that astronomers discovered two other moons (Nix and Hydra) using the Hubble Space Telescope.

The moon P5 was discovered in 2012, also using the?Hubble telescope. The moon P4 was discovered in 2011. Both P4 and P5 are only 15 to 20 miles (20 to 30 km) in diameter.

Voting is closed, but you can still see how your favorite names did on?PlutoRocks.com.

Futures rise in rebound after steep losses on Italy vote

NEW YORK (Reuters) - U.S. stock index futures rose on Tuesday, indicating equities would partially rebound from a steep drop over Italian election results as investors saw opportunities to buy beaten-down shares.

Market participants speculated a coalition government would eventually emerge in Italy and ease worries about a new euro zone debt crisis.

Groups in Italy opposed to economic reforms posted a strong showing, resulting in a political deadlock with a comedian's protest party leading the poll and no group securing a clear majority in parliament.

"We've gone to an environment of political stability to instability, and until we get some type of clarity over who is in charge, which could take days, the market will have renewed concerns," said Art Hogan, managing director of Lazard Capital Markets in New York.

"Investors are taking advantage of the drop, and once some kind of coalition government is formed most of our concerns will be put to rest," Hogan said.

S&P 500 futures rose 3.9 points and were above fair value, a formula that evaluates pricing by taking into account interest rates, dividends and time to expiration on the contract. Dow Jones industrial average futures added 38 points and Nasdaq 100 futures rose 5.75 points.

Major indexes fell more than 1 percent on Monday, with the S&P 500 having its biggest daily drop since November as investors fretted that if Italy does not undertake reforms, that could once again destabilize the euro zone. European equities <.fteu3>, which closed before the results on Monday, fell 1.1 percent.

Investors will pay close attention to the first of two days of congressional testimony by Federal Reserve Chairman Ben Bernanke for insight into the central bank's view of the economy, as well as the outlook for its bond buying program. Last week, equities fell on concerns the program might end sooner than had been anticipated.

Bernanke appears before the Senate Banking Committee at 10 a.m. (1500 GMT).

Economic data will include the CaseShiller report on December home prices at 9 a.m. (1400 GMT). Analysts expect a 0.5 percent rise. January consumer confidence is scheduled for 10 a.m. and is seen rising to 61.0 from 58.6 in the previous month. New-home sales for January also are due at 10 a.m.

The rise in U.S. futures suggests that a recent trend of investors buying on dips will continue. Last week, concerns the Fed might roll back its stimulus policy earlier than expected prompted a sharp two-day decline, though equities recovered most of the lost ground by the end of the week.

Financial shares may be among the most volatile, as the group is closely tied to the pace of global economic growth. Morgan Stanley was one of the top percentage losers on the S&P on Monday, dropping more than 6 percent on concerns about the company's exposure to European debt. It rose 0.8 percent to $22.20 in premarket trading on Tuesday.

Dow component Home Depot Inc , the world's largest home improvement retailer, reported adjusted earnings and sales that beat expectations. Its stock rose 1.5 percent to $64.90 in premarket trading.

For the benchmark S&P 500 index, 1,500 will be watched as a key level after the index closed below it on Monday for the first time since February 4, with selling accelerating after falling below it. An inability to break back above it could portend further losses.

The S&P remains 4.3 percent higher on the year. With 83 percent of the S&P 500 having reported so far, 69 percent beat profit expectations, compared with a 62 percent average since 1994 and 65 percent over the past four quarters, according to Thomson Reuters data. Fourth-quarter S&P earnings are seen having risen 6 percent, above a 1.9 percent forecast at the start of the earnings season.

HP sells webOS operating system to LG Electronics

(AP) ? Hewlett-Packard says it is selling its webOS operating system technology to South Korea's LG Electronics Inc. for an undisclosed sum.

Hewlett Packard Co. and LG said on Monday that LG will use webOS to support its "smart TV" technology. Like smartphones, smart TVs are web-connected and allow for more interaction between the device and its user. LG and rival Samsung Electronics showed off smart TV models earlier this year ahead of the International Consumer Electronics Show in Las Vegas.

HP bought the struggling smartphone maker Palm Inc. for nearly $1 billion in 2010, hoping Palm's webOS would boost its standing in the mobile market. This did not happen.

In late 2011, HP made webOS available as open-source software for anyone to use or modify for free.

Does buying in bulk lead to overconsumption?

Buying in bulk is generally cheaper, it's true. But if it encourages overuse, the potential savings could be lost.?

By Trent Hamm,?Guest blogger / February 24, 2013

A shopper leaves a Costco store in Portland, Ore.Hamm argues that buying in bulk may make groceries cheaper in some cases, but it may lead to using them more liberally, wiping away those savings.

I love orange juice. I just love the stuff. When there?s orange juice in the fridge, I am constantly tempted to pull out the container and pour me a glass of it.

The Simple Dollar is a blog for those of us who need both cents and sense: people fighting debt and bad spending habits while building a financially secure future and still affording a latte or two. Our busy lives are crazy enough without having to compare five hundred mutual funds ? we just want simple ways to manage our finances and save a little money.

This is particularly true when the container is mostly full, but when the container starts to get low, I slow down. I know that the juice will run out soon, so I savor it a bit.

A couple things to think about:

First of all, if I have a lot of orange juice, I drink it faster. If I go to the store and buy one of the really large containers of orange juice, our family will go through the whole thing in three or four days. On the other hand, if I go to the store and buy a small container of orange juice, our family will go through the whole thing in? three or four days.

Why is that? Well, when we have an abundance of something, there?s a tendency to overconsume. I?ll drink it with breakfast, in the morning, in the afternoon? if I feel there?s a lot of orange juice left, I?ll drink it.

Second, although the cost per ounce of the big container of juice is lower than the smaller container, the big container does cost more. The sticker price on the 96 ounce container is substantially higher than the one on the 32 ounce container.

Now, you could easily argue that these points are moot because I?m talking about something non-essential to begin with. We don?t need orange juice, so the entire purchase is non-essential.

However, the same phenomenon exists with more essential purchases, too. Take hygiene products, for example.

Let?s say I buy a very large jug of shampoo at the store. I?m standing in the shower with it and I give it a little squeeze. Immediately, an overabundance of shampoo hits my hand. I don?t need that much shampoo. The thing is, even if I?m really careful, the nature of that large bottle often puts too much shampoo on my hand. It just goes to waste.

(On the other hand, when there?s just a little shampoo left, I tend to be very frugal and careful with it. I?ll use as little as possible so I can make the bottle last longer.)

Another example: spices. It might be less expensive per ounce to buy a large amount of dried thyme at a spice store, but if you can?t use it quickly and it sits in your pantry for a couple of years, it becomes useless, losing its flavor.

This leads us, again, back to bulk buying. Bulk buying doesn?t save you anything if you waste the excess. On top of that, having a large quantity of something often encourages wasteful use, like drinking too much orange juice or using too much shampoo or leaving too much thyme in your pantry.

Because of this, I?ve started to hold off on bulk buying unless it?s something that I?m not going to overconsume and I?m not going to waste. I buy small amounts of spices and I buy the small container of orange juice. With shampoo, I keep a small container in the shower and fill it occasionally from a big container I keep in the closet, which still causes me to have that ?I only have a bit left ? better make it last? attitude when in the shower.

What do I actually buy in bulk and use normally, though? Garbage bags. Household cleaning supplies. Liquid soap, particularly if I have a dispenser for it that allows me to dispense a squirt at a time. Individually packaged goods. Rechargeable batteries. In other words, non-perishables that I can?t easily overuse.

Bulk buying is a great idea, but if it leads to overconsumption or to waste, you?re not really gaining anything. Bulk buying only really shines when you?re buying something that you?ll use completely but not use excessively.

Giorgio Armani could claim some big wins at the Oscars on Sunday night: The designer dressed Jessica Chastain and Quvenzhane Wallis.

Chastain, in a glistening copper-tone strapless gown with mermaid hem, looked like an old-world glamorous movie star, especially with her oversized vintage Harry Winston diamond earrings and bright red lipstick. "I chose it because to me it was a throwback to old Hollywood," she said.

Meanwhile, she told E!: "It's a very 'Happy birthday, Mr. President' dress."

Naomi Watts was expected to wear a gunmetal beaded gown with a geometric cutout on the bodice, also by Armani. She and Chastain were both considered fashion "gets" for the Academy Awards in Los Angeles.

Quvenzhane, with a silver headband in her hair and carrying her puppy purse, wore an Armani Junior navy-blue dress with black, navy and silver jewels scattered on the skirt and a big bow on the back. She apparently has another Armani dress, a pink one, ready for the afterparty. "I liked it because it was sparkly and puffy."

Jennifer Lawrence was in a white strapless gown by Dior Haute Couture with sophisticated pulled-back hair, diamond-ball earrings and a delicate long necklace that hung down in the back.

Amy Adams wore a dove-gray Oscar de la Renta gown with a sweetheart neckline and tiers of frayed chiffon and tulle on the ballskirt, and Zoe Saldana wore a strapless gray gown with floral appliques. Reese Witherspoon's modern gown by Louis Vuitton was mostly electric blue with a strip of black at the bustline.

Kerry Washington wore a Miu Miu gown with a chunky beaded bodice and orange-red skirt with a delicate bow at the waist.

Other expected designer moments to unfold at the Dolby Theatre include Barbra Streisand in a black, bias-cut, asymmetrical Donna Karan gown that the designer dubbed "City Lights." Renee Zellweger was expected to wear a Carolina Herrera gown.

Headed to the Oscars herself, Nadja Swarovski, the head of corporate communications for the crystal company Swarovski that makes the beadwork for the majority of the red-carpet gowns, expected the collective fashion picture to be fairly minimalist looks in monochromatic colors.

Still, she said, there'll be sparkle. "It's more of a dot on the 'I' or cross on the 'T,' more than a whole of sparkle, but it makes a great palette for jewelry."

SearchPro Systems, a leader in VSEO techniques, can improve your company's online presence

When it comes to posting videos online there?s more to the process than just posting the video if you want it to get noticed. A video?s impact will be different if?you?ve?incorporated video search engine optimization or VSEO with it. By taking the right steps you can maximize your VSEO and your video will get more views and your overall brand will improve.

Keywords

Your company may have keywords ready to go when you add VSEO to your established SEO campaign. If not though, you?ll need to take some time and research the keywords that people are looking for. You?re looking for keywords that are searched for in a high volume and are relevant to your brand. After you find the keywords you want, you can put them in the description of the video as well.

Another key thing to do is to create a video site map after a video is completed and submit it to search engines to help them index the content within the video which will help you move up in the rankings. Use these keywords in the title of the video and tag your videos with them also.

Measuring Success

You create engaging content but you don?t know how well it?s working for your SEO count. Your video may have a thousand hits, but is it really helping your VSEO strategy? The key to a successful VSEO campaign is the amount of times your video is shared across multiple channels. This will help you maximize your play count and increase your presence online which will give you more social credibility to search engines.

Embracing social media channels to share your video will help too. Your video will need to be able to play in multiple formats and to different kinds of people.

Engage your Audience

A way to increase your video?s search ranking is to ask your audience to comment, like and rate your video. You can?t just assume they?ll do it themselves; you have to ask them and be clear about it in your description. The higher rating your video has, the more likely it is to get viewed, commented on and shared. Search engines will see all the social activity that your video is getting and rate it higher because of it.

The Importance of Embedding

Of course you?re going to embed a video onto your site, but what about other people?s sites? Make sure you allow users to embed your videos on their sites and then track how many times your videos get embedded. The more times your video is embedded the more search engines will rank it as its influence grows.

As you can see, VSEO can play a very important part to your brand strategy and?shouldn?t?be overlooked. It is a tool to share you content, engage your audience, and build your brand better than your competition.
